Round 2: Hope
Story: Drabble
Prompt: Whaletail Island
Word Count: 339
Katara breathed in the smell of salt and seaweed as she stared across the vast, blue ocean on the coast of Whaletail Island. So large, so full of life, and yet so very quiet. "One can't help but wonder what might lie beneath the impenetrable darkness of the great sea, always taunting us with its mysteries. But alas, those questions belong to another day, to another soul, for now the power of the ocean is too mighty to tame or control, and we may never truly understand it. But a thing isn't beautiful because you know how it works, or where it is from. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I see a beauty unmatched in sincerity and simplicity."
"Ugh! What are you, a thesaurus?"
Katara whipped around and closed her diary with a loud SNAP! "What?! Toph? What are you doing here?"
"Duh, looking for you. We're almost ready to leave. What are you doing way over here, anyway?" Toph asked as she plopped down beside her friend.
"Oh, just... thinking," said Katara. A gust of salty wind rushed passed and Katara reached up to touch her mother's necklace. "It's beautiful, isn't it?"
"I can only assume that you're talking about the ocean, which, as I will remind you, I. Can't. See." Toph said as she fell backward onto the grass.
"Would you like me to describe it to you?" asked Katara.
"Meh. I've seen enough of Whaletail, to be honest. At least on Ember island we were hiding out as fugitives." For a long time there was silence. Nothing except the sound of the rushing waves could be heard.
SHOOM!
WOOSH!
SHOOM!
WOOSH!
Katara knew it by heart, as if it were a song. Not only that, but it was also a way for her to feel close to her mother. At times it felt almost as though she was standing right behind her. Katara closed her eyes and lied back with Toph, listening to the ocean's lullaby on the shores of Whaletail Island.
