Year.
Author's Notes: In memory of all those who lost their lives on the September
11 attacks.. Thanks to Gabi for betaing this Vignette for me. To be followed
by a sequel.
It's New Year's Eve, 2001. I see you standing on the other side of the room, talking with my once enemy and his wife. These past years we've all grown to be close friends, even more so in light of recent events of destruction against the United States, and this city, our home, that we live in.
I watch carefully, seeing you breathe in and then out. I know you'd rather be elsewhere at this moment, I can feel your pain. The pain you feel in losing so many close friends in those horrific attacks. My love, your eyes meet mine and I feel my heart skip a beat. There is not long before we enter the new year, 'five minutes to go' I hear Lexington call.
Simple logic would suggest I walk over, take you in my arms and wrap you in a loving embrace. But, you begin walking over to me, seeing your hips sway with every gentle move. 'Hey big guy,' you say in your warm, soft voice.
I bow my head, taking one of your hands in mine, leading you over to a clearing in the room. I want to share a dance with you, before this year is out. We step close together, smiles are exchanged and some romantic flute starts playing over the speakers. All those in our company also start dancing, Brooklyn and Lexington with their new mates from the Avalon clan; Broadway and a very pregnant Angela.
We dance together for what seems like an eternity, there is so much I want to tell you, so much I want to say to comfort you. You smile up at me, trying to tell me you're fine, that everything is okay now. But I know, I know the truth behind those sad brown eyes. The truth that tells me how much you wish it had of been you rather than those you worked side by side with on the streets of Manhattan. On the streets of the city you have protected since long before I awoke and met you.
Suddenly the loud voices of those surrounding us shout out, '10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2....' And just as they get to One, I frame your sweet face in my hands, and capture your lips with mine. The new year has arrived, 'I love you Elisa.'
You look up at me, the sadness fading, tears of happiness reach your eyes, 'I love you too Goliath.'
And there, I brought you into another tender embrace, wrapping my wings around you as I kiss you in this new year. Knowing that together, we will see this next year through, as we have done these past years knowing each other.
