Years ago Fiona read a book that was about weird connections that twins had. Some could finish each other's sentences, other's could tell what the others were feeling, and, sometimes, if one twin was hurt, the other twin would automatically be able to feel like something was wrong. She never believed that stuff could actually happen and promptly forgot about it.
Fiona had a month left of her senior year. She had had a rough year but it was finally working out the way she wanted it to. She was dating Adam and they had a wonderful relationship and she was doing well in all her classes.
Declan's school year ended earlier than Degrassi's, so he was home and, in Fiona's opinion, he was a bit depressed. She tried to convince Holly J to break up with Sav, but she didn't have any luck in that. So she set out to find him a new girl, after all she was his twin, if he wasn't happy, she couldn't be either.
He went out on a few dates but he never seemed to connect with any of the girls that he went out with. She felt bad that she was spending so much time with Adam so she vowed to start hanging out with Declan more. Declan told her that she shouldn't give up on her relationship just so she could hang out on the couch with her brother.
Fiona never believed that twins had that freaky connection thing…until she was sitting in history and a feeling of sudden dread washed over her. Her blood ran cold, and for some reason, her heart just hurt. She felt as if something was missing in her soul and she lost a certain spark that she always felt inside.
She knew right away that something was very, very, terribly wrong. She didn't wait until class was over before she stood up, grabbed her bag, and rushed out of her classroom and then out of the school. She ran home, all the while cursing the fact that she was wearing her new heels.
She stepped inside her house and instantly felt it. It was eerie and way too cold and it just felt empty. She cautiously walked upstairs, looking around as if something might jump out at her. She opened the bathroom door and found nothing. She walked down the hall to Declan's room and slowly opened the door.
That's when she started screaming.
It was the talk of Degrassi for weeks. Everybody was shocked that golden boy Declan Coyne would kill himself. People joked that they were surprised since he loved himself too much to do something that drastic, other people didn't know what to say.
Fiona didn't say anything for three days straight. She didn't sleep. She didn't eat. All she saw over and over again was her brother hanging from a rope around his neck. Her shrink can't even get her to talk.
She stares off into space doing his funeral. When he's lowered into the ground, her mask finally breaks and she releases a few tears.
She never regains that spark that she felt run out of her that day. She considers that that book she read might have actually been right.
