Jasper
A Different Vampire
The black sky of the Philadelphia night was just as gloomy as I felt. After I had left the South, I had had many less than pleasant interactions with other vampires. I briefly wondered if I should have gone with Peter and Charlotte, but when they'd offered, I hadn't been thinking beyond leaving Maria.
Mario's ABC Diner was sitting across the street. I paused by the door and cautiously searched for the scent of another vampire inside. The scent of five humans and one other vampire was what came. That puzzled me. Most vampires I had run into were with at least two other vampires. I decided to take my chances. It wasn't the Volturi, so it couldn't be horrible. I walked in and felt the emotions of the diner's occupants wash over me.
The blond waitress was feeling flirtatious and frustrated as she waited for a male teenager to notice her. I couldn't tell the reason behind people's emotions, but it was pretty obvious why she felt the way she did.
The teenager who she was trying to flirt with was feeling excited about something as he and his friend tried to catch the attention of the vampire. My attention turned to the vampire.
She had black hair and had a pixie-like appearance. She had a black, long sleeved sweater on and was reading a newspaper. Her right foot seemed to be tapping impatiently off to the side of her chair. I sensed impatience from her, then suddenly happiness seemed to radiate from her so strongly that even the waitress looked away from the boys to look at her.
Quietly, I slid into a small booth. I needed to stop and think.
"Excuse me, do you need anything?" The waitress asked me, gliding over, ignoring the teenager now that I had entered the diner.
"No." I grumbled. She smiled, trying to look pretty.
"Let me know if you change your mind." She said sweetly, then glided away. Her scent blew my way and I felt venom swirl in my mouth. I wasn't thirsty, but if she annoyed me too much, I would track her down later.
I heard the vampire lower her newspaper and quietly approach me. I sighed. I wasn't interested in talking to her, whether she was alone or not. I kept my head down as I heard her approach. I knew it was the vampire because her footsteps were too light and dainty to be one of the humans. I heard her slide into the seat across from me. I noticed the color of her eyes were gold instead of red, like they should be.
"Jasper?" Her voice was light and musical. She sounded concerned. Concerned about what? Me? That I wasn't alone?
"Jasper? My name is Alice. I've been waiting here for a long time. Are you okay? You don't seem well. I figured I would have seen an attack on you after the run in that happened in Chicago, but I didn't. Did something happen?" She asked. Okay, this complete stranger was worried about me.
"I'm sorry, ma'am. You must have the wrong person." I said quietly. I stood up to leave. She grabbed my arm and pulled me down with amazing force for someone her size.
"Just let me explain. Please?" She pleaded.
"Fine." I said, crossing my arms and looking at her. She smiled and she was feeling triumphant.
"When I woke up from my transformation, I was all alone. The vampire who bit me just left. I had a vision of finding you and we're going to be part of a great coven. They live peacefully with humans and there's five of them. There's Carlisle, Edward, Emmett, Esme, and Rosalie." Alice said, her amber eyes shining.
I wanted to believe her. She painted the image of living peacefully with humans and with other vampires successfully.
"Where do we find them?" I asked. She smiled.
"Follow me." She said. I followed her to the door and the two of us ran into the night.
