Gray

"You're goin' gray!" she announced to her reflection, staring at the silver streaks at her temples that contrasted sharply against the ruddy brown tresses elsewhere on her head. She shook her head a couple of times, but the gray remained. "Hen, hen, hen, ain't that somethin'?" she once again asked the mirror, running her hands through her hair. "Me, an old woman already."

It wasn't really true, and she knew it. Despite the growing gray in her hair, it wasn't age that did that to her. As a matter of fact, the count of her years was still fairly low.

No, a full life was the reason for the deteriorating color of the hair upon Kaywinnit Lee Frye-Tam's head. A very full life that had never ceased to make drastic turns.

Nothing ever seemed to run very smoothly.

Years on Serenity had given her more than a little taste of action, near-death experiences and flat-out bad luck; a year or so of a rocky marriage to Simon before it smoothed over nicely had given Kaylee a taste of emotional stress and struggle; and most of all, years of raising kids on a spaceship unsuited for anything of the sort had given her endless hours of frustration and annoyances and worry. That of all things was a constant battle.

And those were the reasons for Kaylee's gray hair. Not her age, but Serenity, Simon and three sons… Her life.

With a satisfied sigh, she gathered her hair on the back of her head into a tail and twisted an elastic band around it to keep it in place. This way the silvery splotches at her temples were clearly visible and wonderfully obvious.

The gray was a crow she'd wear from now on proudly.
