Chapter One: A Warm Welcome From Your Narrator

Nyx Oakwood had eyes that were always smirking at you, as if they could see all your faults and liked you all the more for them.

Well, the one eye that you could see, as her left eye was covered by a thick sheet of dark brown hair, which made it all the more unnerving when she glanced at you. Even though the girl's eye smiled, she herself did not except on the most amusing of moments, which should be documented in history textbooks all over the world, but sadly is not.

As you may have guessed, Nyx Oakwood was a very mysterious person.

Because of this, the most esteemed gossipers chatted about what could have happened to make the girl so closed off from everyone else. Most of them settled on the idea that she may have had a rough past, though still others doubted it, claiming that she was probably just born weird.

The 'rough past' idea wasn't exactly without evidence however. If you sat at the Madison's Coffee shop in between the Food Lion and the Thrift Store at exactly 6:30, you'd see Nyx walk past. If you'd had enough coffee to get you through the early morning hours, (which I'd suggest you get from the shop you're sitting at if need be) you'd notice a few things about Nyx that wouldn't be obvious if it weren't on a regular schedule.

They would warn you, however, not to stare too intently at her, as she may catch your eye in hers and tilt her head a little, as a mother would observe a children in the middle of a tedious act, her one visible blue eye mocking you, giving you a look that clearly meant 'Really? You'll have to try a little harder than that!'

Nyx walks with a slight limp in her right leg and a hunch in her shoulders, her head looking towards the ground as she rushed off to the school two blocks down the road.

The gossipers used to say that she looked very much like a bird, always in a hurry, never making eye contact, always looking like she could take flight at any moment in a swirl of feathers.

I can imagine that you'd like to know more about our dear Nyx Oakwood besides the small scraps I've given you, (quite tauntingly I'd have to admit) but you'll figure more about our mysterious friend eventually, as she has secrets that she's not even sure about herself.

I can also imagine that you'd like to know who your narrator is.

This information is confidential however, though I'm sure you can guess as to my identity as we continue our tale.

But for now, continue on, dear Reader, to where our little heroine is, but tread with caution! This story you're reading is not one full of light or hope. It's about mystery and legend combining to form something...unusual.

Let's just say that the more you learn about Him, the more He learns about you.

And you're going to learn an awful lot.
