"Whatcha watching there, Carrots?" the sound of his voice echoed in her ears as Nick stood behind the couch looking over her shoulder. Surprised by his sudden appearance, she jumped up bumping her head against his chest. His hand rubs the top of her head, she quickly looks back to him. The first things she sees is the way his half-lidded eyes never look away from her, "Sorry about that."
She blushes, "N-No problem. The movie is just a cheesy chick flick. The typical lovey dovey movie."
Before she can finish, he's moving from behind the couch to the open space next to her, "Mind if I watch with you?
"Are you sure? It's full of romance and kissing and stuff. Doesn't seem like your kind of thing."
"Hey, I could enjoy stuff like that. It's not all action with me, you know," he winks her way somehow causing her nose to twitch more.
"Fine," she scooted over his way, that became a routine for her during movies with him, and she rests her head against his chest. It only took a second for her to realize how fast his heartbeat felt and even his breathing was unsteady. She didn't bother asking if he was feeling okay because she knew he'd brush it off like he usually did.
Things stayed silent between them. Only the occasional laugh and exchange of looks, but then he'd stop laughing leaving just a smile on his face while his eyes lingered in hers a little too long. So, she'd turn back to the TV screen, pretending as if everything was normal. However, he'd throw his arm over the couch, scratch in between her ears, and it caused her to almost melt into him.
"What made you want to watch this type of movie?" he finally asked. She shrugs.
"I like the romance. It's a nice change of pace to my real life," she smirked as he took a quick glance over at him. The only response he gave was a mumbled grunt, but she noticed he didn't look angry. Just a tad bit of sadness in his eyes. She can't remember a time where she saw actual sadness from him. Maybe during the Bellweather case, but even then it wasn't like this.
And before she can stop it, "I've never actually been as close with someone as I am with you," slips out and now she can feel him tense up. She doesn't know if it helped or made it worse, but now he's shaking her off and looking at everything except her, "Did that hurt you? I'm sorry if it did."
"No, Judy, it didn't," his voice is quivering. That mixed with him saying her real name, which he only does during serious moments, is what leads her to believe that there's something he's keeping for her.
She lets out a frustrated sigh that makes his slouched ears stand up, "You know before you, I don't believe I actually cared about anything, let alone anyone, but then you come in threatening me with tax invasion and I just didn't understand. Don't get me wrong, I was impressed that you'd actually black male me. But I didn't care about this case and I didn't care about trying to save your job. Then, here comes your chef yelling at you for doing better than they did and it hit a nerve with me because somehow I saw something in you that I never see anyone," finally he shifts his eyes toward her, the sadness is long gone, "Determination."
"I thought that annoyed you."
"Eh, well, at first it did, but that determination saved my life. Then again, it almost got me killed, too," the snarky comment relieved the tension she was beginning to feel, "And you saw something in me no one has ever seen. You knew that I was more than just a sneaky fox. You saw that I could be more."
"You are more, Nick."
"And that, Judy," he slips his fingers through her hand that she didn't even realize he was holding and her breath hitches in her throat, "is why I think I'm falling for you."
If she didn't feel nervous before, she certainly is now. A million questions run through her thoughts yet she only needs to ask one.
"If I felt the same way, what would you say?"
And that grin she adores shows back, "I'd say I think we should do something about that."
