Disclaimer: Not mine, all Disney's. This is just a short short SHORT little fic that has been bouncing around in my head for like, forever now, and I finally managed to get it written down. Anyway, who else LOVED "Race Of A Lifetime"?! I have about four stories in mind, just from that show alone! I LOVED it! Anyway, without further ado..

Heartbeat

Jamie Waite could feel the child's heartbeat underneath his fingertips. It a was a feather light boom-boom, the light pressure exciting the nerve endings in the pads of his fingers just enough that he was sure that it was there.

A wide, relieved smile pulled at his lips, and he began to count the beats, making sure that he kept his counting to himself.

One...

Two...

Three...

Four....

And so on and so on.

When he was sure that the beats per minute were correct and in the safe range, he let a slow sigh of relief escape his lips, dancing in the still night air.

The moon glowed in the sky, full and bright. The ivory orb hung in the velvet sky like a heavily pregnant woman lying on a blanket, her arms propping her up as she looked down at her husband as he laid his cheek against her belly, listening to their child move within her.

A slightly moaning sound yanked his attention away from the steady heartbeat of the little girl, making his look up--into a pair of sleepy, deep hazel eyes. A slow, half-awake smile pulled at her lips, and she reached down to stroke his cheek.

"Jamie. Really. She's okay. And she'll still be there in the morning. She's not going anywhere for AT LEAST another three months. Now please go to sleep--you have all those tests tomorrow." Caitie Waite whispered to her husband, running her hand over her heavily pregnant stomach, and then through her husband's still spiky hair.

Jamie smiled back at her, before pressing a feather light kiss to the swollen curve of his wife's belly. He laid down beside his wife, her back turned to his front, his arm wrapped around her, holding her to him.

He laid beside her for the longest time, listening to her breathe, his hand sliding to rest against his daughter's heartbeat. A smile graced his features as he finally surrounded himself to sleep, knowing that this was where he had always been meant to be.
