Melawen twirled around, the skirt of her dress flowing out

Melawen twirled around, the skirt of her dress flowing out. She tilted her head up as rain began to drop from the clouds. Her dress would soon be too wet to swirl, but she didn't mind. This was all she wanted to do. Just dance.

It was the first relaxing thing she could think to do. Especially in this rain. He wasn't here, watching her as he usually was; he didn't really like the rain. Unlike her. She gloried in the water that fell from the heavens.

So she had fled to the rose garden, the lighting flashing above her head as she twirled among the multi-colored flowers. This was the place most like home. How she longed to be home, near her father and sisters. For one brief moment, she wished she had a partner to dance with. But no, the only one available was him, and right now she wanted to be alone. Or at least she thought she did.

It wasn't that she hated him, she just didn't know what to make of him. He definitely wasn't human, he was much too stoic, watching the world from a distance instead of living in it. But he was so like one. The haunted look in his eyes, the grief of a thousand year weighing down on his mind… she could almost believe that he had been human, maybe once upon a time, in a fantasy only one's imagination could concoct.

She closed her eyes, imagining the music she danced to. Her feet moved gracefully, taking her back and forth. The aroma of the roses and rain was intoxicating, but she drank in the smell.

"Melawen." The voice stopped her cold. She turned, seeing Haldir waiting patiently at the entrance to the rose garden. She dropped her hands, and looked to the ground. "Please, Melawen, marry me." She stared into his eyes. Such hopeful, beautiful, kind eyes.

"I can't." she whispered. "Not now."

But she reflected, as time and eternity went on, she found the impossibility of marrying him less impossible than it ever had been.

Hope you enjoyed!
