Persephone
Lovely goddess of golden hair, slim frame-
Beautiful blue of the cornflower are her eyes:
Sweet corn, golden wheat, given by Demeter's love-
Eternal spring, Kore Persephone its beloved idol.
A sweet romp in the golden fields, yields
Hundred petals of the purple narcissus, tantalizing
Poor Persephone- she reaches to pluck,
The earth is rent in two-
Dark lord Hades, King of the Underworld, borne by
Chariot of shadow horses bears Kore away
Gone, Demeter's sorrow tears the land
Persephone borne away, she is to be Queen of the Underworld
Hades's love so powerful, Persephone eats of
Four seeds to bind her to the dark:
Food of Underworld once partaken, there she must stay
Pomegranate of marriage, she is Hades's bride.
Demeter's rage returns the goddess-
Queen though she must remain
Six months above, warm spring
Persephone's time as goddess:
Six months below, now as Queen
Ruling the darkness below- alongside
Hades, husband, king, captor, god.
