1. this is how it is

Mornings go like this.

Tomoyo wakes up first – six-thirty, she turns to shut off the alarm on her phone, and tries to stretch out her back. She looks at the ceiling and then at the grey or blue sky through the blur of her curtains. Her mood fluctuates – sometimes pleasant, after a good dream – sometimes neutral, when she doesn't remember. Tomoyo isn't sure when the last time she had a nightmare was – or maybe she forgot them quickly. Most days, getting up is not too difficult, but she always shivers.

If it's a Monday, her first port of call is to wake Sakura up. If it's a Tuesday or Wednesday, she washes her face and brushes her teeth first, listening for sounds from Sakura's room. She usually goes to check in on Sakura on Thursdays and Fridays. Tomoyo never wakes up Sakura on a Saturday or Sunday morning, because that would be too difficult.

Most days, Sakura doesn't sit for breakfast – she grabs toast and goes. Tomoyo tries to sit and eat something – maybe a steamed bun, or some leftover congee. Maybe a banana. She doesn't like not eating properly – it goes against her instincts. But picking out the right outfit for the day or fixing her hair always seems to take longer than anticipated. Or maybe she just loses moments to glancing at Sakura as she darts in and out of the bathroom and kitchen.

Eriol was right, Tomoyo thinks every so often, living with Sakura may not have been the best idea. She is probably not her best self.

But as Sakura cheerfully calls out a goodbye on her way out, Tomoyo thinks that it is in fact, entirely worth it. They go on the occasional grocery run together. They take turns doing laundry and clean the apartment together every few weeks. Sakura always reminds Tomoyo to take care of herself and pressures her to go to the gym. Tomoyo loves collaborating with Sakura on their latest online shopping haul. She likes seeing Sakura's serious side when they're figuring out monthly bills, and whether or not they've finally gotten to a point where they could afford adopting a cat.

She loves getting ready with Sakura before a night out.

She dreads Sakura running to the door when Syaoran calls.

But this is just how it is.
