A/N: You know, it's pretty darn satisfying when the same poem can be read by you people, and my English teacher, and get two totally different meanings out of it.

Black and White

Black is the absence of white,

White is the absence of black.

One represents death and despair,

The other hope and purity as light as air.

The rational mind,

The emotional mind.

Together they are

Unstoppable.

Apart they are

Uncontrollable.

Opposites attract they say.

Black and white does so without fail.

You see it everywhere,

Television,

Photographs,

Papers,

Printers,

Clothes,

Paint,

Books,

Everything.

People say colors have personalities,

But people also say black and white are shades.

Flat.

Empty.

So if black and white are empty and hopeless,

Then why did I wake up at 3:38

On a perfectly good Sunday morning

With these words is my head?

If black and white are flat and dull,

Then why couldn't I fall back asleep?

If black and white are unspeaking and dead,

Then why did I wake up at 3:38

On a perfectly good Sunday morning

With these words in my head,

And 'Early Winter' by Gwen Stefani playing

Over and over

In my mind

As I think of this poem,

When the lyrics have nothing to do with it?

If black and white are shades and not colors,

Then why is there so much symbolism?

So much depth?

So much life?

The presence of one,

Is the absence of the other.
