Boyd cared about everyone on his team especially Grace and when he found out that she had been kidnapped by Linda Cummings, he was determined to save her. Even if it meant risking his own life for her. Although Linda had made it clear that he had to choose between killing Penny and risking Grace's life, Boyd couldn't choose. For one he didn't want to prove Linda right that he was capable of murder but more importantly he didn't want to lose Grace. He didn't want to make the team go through that ordeal again of losing yet another team member. They had been through so much over the past year that losing another member of the team would be too much for them. Losing Mel had been difficult for all of them but it had been particularly difficult for Boyd. And when he found out that Luke had died, he was devastated. However it was Grace who was always there to help him deal with his grief. But now that he had a life and death situation in his midst, a decision that he had to make, Boyd couldn't deal with the thought that he could lose Grace as well. He cared too much about her that the very thought of him losing someone dear to his heart made his stomach churn. He wouldn't be able to deal with the grief again and seeing Grace being held hostage by that psychopath made him even more determined to save her.
When the moment had come from when he had reached the warehouse to the point where he had ripped the webcam from the ceiling, Boyd felt like a part of him had gone, a part of the team had gone and at that moment in time he felt as if he had let Grace down. He had promised to save her but now that promise had been broken. How would he be able to tell the team? How would he be able to say to them that Linda had won her Endgame and Grace had died? The team would certainly think that it was his fault. And he wouldn't blame them. They would be right; he would blame himself if that happened. Thankfully Boyd saved her just in time and Linda hadn't won her game. After that ordeal Boyd promised that he would never let anything happen to Grace again.
For over nine years that they have known each, Boyd and Grace have not only been colleagues but have been friends, close friends, firm friends. And though occasionally the two of them did have their disagreements on cases, their friendship remained strong. The younger members of the team could see that it ran deep though they never knew how deep it went. They all knew that whenever Grace's life was being harmed, Boyd would always drop everything just to be there for her. And that caring side of Boyd was obvious to the team particularly when he had found out that Grace had cancer. They all knew that he had found it hard dealing with the death of Luke but losing Grace would be unbearable. Boyd could easily lose his temper and they all knew that but it was always Grace who was always there to mediate his outbursts.
Normally when they had their arguments on cases within a few minutes it would have all blown over and the two of them would be talking again but that was before the massive argument during the case of Daniel Lennon.
