Somewhere in the night, a man cries—alone;
no one is permitted to see his tears.
He surrounds himself with the shadows
of what once was a happy family.
Tendrils of regret embed in his heart.
Blue eyes look to the future; there is no past.

Somewhere in the night, a man cries—alone;
no one is permitted to see his tears.
He surrounds himself with the shadows
left by former dreams and lost love.
Tendrils of regret embed in his heart.
Blue eyes look to the past; there is no future.

Somewhere in the night, a man dies—
alone, swallowed by the darkness;
alone, devoured by regret.
Author's Note: Written for "The Stratified Agate Competition". Pairing is Dumbledore/Grindelwald. I'm a bit rusty at poetry, but the idea was for the stanzas to be interchangeable so they could represent either man to highlight that, even toward the end of their lives, they were still very much alike.
