Temperance Brennan inhaled deeply as she walked into her lab one Friday night. The lab was almost completely silent except for the steady whir of the machines. The sharp smell of formaldehyde, chlorine, and various other chemicals assaulted her senses. The dim lighting cast an almost eerie glow on the examination tables, but she had grown used to it. Most people thought that she was strange for going into the lab so late at night. They didn't understand what the lab meant to her. They didn't understand how it made her feel secure.

Since she was 15, people had been abandoning her. Family, lovers, friends, they had all left at some point. Even though Booth said he would never leave her, she knew that someday he would, either by choice or by some horrendous accident. The lab would never leave her like they had or could. The lab was a constant source of comfort for her. No matter what time of the day it was, no matter what kind of mood she was in, it was always there for her. She knew that this probably wasn't the healthiest way to view the lab psychologically but she didn't put much stock into psychology anyway.

Wandering further into the lab, she felt a sense of serenity overcome her. The near silence and dim lighting relaxed her, clearing her mind for the long night of work that lay ahead of her. Stepping into her office she turned on a light and dropped her purse on a side table. Grabbing a case file and her lab coat, she sauntered out of her office and up the stairs of the platform. As she prepared the bones from limbo for reconstruction and reassembly, she came to a realization. After years of searching for a place of comfort, both at home and around the world, she had finally found her place. She was finally home.
