In the dead of night he dreams in shades of shadows. The darkness of his past shrouds his mind. It binds him to sorrow that he doesn't believe in during the light. His stubborn show of strength crumbles into dust. For an hour or two she watches as his strength vanishes and despair poisons his resolve.

She would interfere and wake him if she could. Her hands hold him; keeping him in place and offering comfort. This is his uttermost innocence. He needs this time. He needs to see the darkness to appreciate the light. How can he ever allow himself this precious time if he thinks that she knows?

How can she take away this chance from him? He needs time to be weak and so heart-achingly human with all of humanity's emotions laid before him. He needs to experience it all to be complete. So she holds him with her hands and words. She whispers, hoping to allow some light into even the darkest places of his existence.

Her heart aches to see him happier. His anguish fills her with dread. It kills her inside to lie each and every day; to pretend that she's oblivious to his torment. She smiles brightly and speaks as though she's carefree when she just wants to hold him.

"Nngh," he groans.

She cups his face and leans over as if to kiss him. "It's going to be okay. You're safe, you're safe…"

Will one of their children walk in on this nightly routine? The question haunts her. She couldn't expect one of their children not to say anything. She couldn't say that it was only a nightmare without teaching them to ignore other people's pain.

She lies down and wraps her arms tightly around him and whispers;

It's just a dream… I won't leave you. I'm here to keep you safe.

He stares at the sudden circular beam of light that shattered the darkness. The beautiful, untainted glory has stolen his words. Her voice drifts like a dream and wraps around him protectively. The strange echo from his restless nights, he realises, was always her voice, her light, breaking through his nightmares; a safe haven from the memories that won't be forgotten.

He slowly approaches the light. His legs are numb but growing stronger. His hand is stretching towards her light, her love. A stupid grin spreads across his face. The screams of the past are drowning and he starts to run.

With a jolt, he wakes. His eyes stare at the white washed ceiling. The pale stream of light comes from the open window to the right. He glances in its direction to find her sleeping soundly by his side. Her peaceful face widens his smile.

His hand clutches her right arm which is wrapped loosely across his chest gently.

"I love you,"

Author's Note: Oh my goodness! This is the third one that's done in time! Woo hoo! Thank you for reading. I really hope that you've enjoyed the story. I'm sorry if you weren't satisfied. I haven't seen much of the series and I haven't touched the manga. I just love this couple. They are so sweet and fabulous. Trust me, they're facing tough competition. Not just any couple can stand up to the ones in Seven of the Sky and the Chinese Paladin franchise. Oh, I listened to a song whilst writing this! The song is called 'May I'. That's all I can say! No, I'm not telling what couple this is or what the message of this tale is!
