I sat in front of a vanity, my lips pursed in thoughtful silence as I stared at my reflection. My hair softly curled at the end, I wore a white, knee-length dress, and a small crown perched on top of my head for my performance of "World is Mine." People rushed around me, making last-minute preparations. As everyone rushed around me, I was daydreaming of actually having 'my very own prince in the world.' Someone who saw me, Hatsune Miku, for who I am instead of the fabricated me that was all over the media. Someone who-
"Miss Hatsune?"
I was snapped out of my fantasies by Maria, my hairdresser, who had my hair in two identical pigtails. "Yeah?" I asked, turning to her and forcing a smile. She obviously wasn't falling for it.
"Is everything alright?" She asked, looking as though she actually cared to know. That was why I liked her. She was one of few people who I worked with who actually treated me like a person with feelings, and not like a singing doll that could be dressed up and played with.
The fake smile slid from my face as I rested my chin in my hand. "No," I sighed. "It's not." I picked up a strand of hair and twirled it around my finger as I let out another sigh. "I just want a boyfriend who loves me for me and not my popularity."
She embraced me sympathetically. "I know, honey," she responded. "I would think the same thing." We sat like that for a long time until my manager's voice rang out across the room.
"Alright people! Showtime!" I heard him clap. "Now, where's the talent?"
I separated myself from Maria and made my way towards the platform where I would make my entrance, which was where Andrew (my manager) stood.
"Um, Andrew?" I started as I approached him. "I was wondering if maybe I could lose the crown and we could start with a slower song, maybe-"
He held his hand up to stop me. "Miku, darling, this is all planned very precisely. Just because you're having a mood swing doesn't mean we can just switch songs. We're going to start with the song that makes the crowd believe that the world is, in fact, yours." His eyes glared at me from beneath his glasses. "Understand?"
I felt my face sink as I nodded. He must have seen my expression because he added, "Miku, cheer up! This is all for you after all!"
Which kinda sucked, because at the moment I would have rather been anywhere else.
I walked over to stand on my platform. Everyone looked at me and smiled, some mouthing break a leg! Suddenly the platform started to rise and I turned towards the stage, plastering a huge smile on my face. I looked out towards the crowd, listening to the deafening roar of my name being chanted all throughout the stadium.
It's showtime, I thought as the music started to play.
