Nope, I do not own Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu obviously, and this fic was pretty much written on a whim. It's an illogical story about Akihisa's past, but please enjoy anyway.

If you want to review go ahead. And to the flamers, well, flamers gotta go flame and let off steam somewhere. Just tone it down a bit, capiche?

Chapter the 1st

Akihisa was twelve back then.

His parents were overseas, working at God-knows-where. he also had an older sister, Akira, but she was in the United States.

Which left Akihisa all alone in Japan, entrusted to the care of his grandfather, living in that quaint little house of his in the countryside.

To Akihisa, his grandfather was a mysterious figure.

He would go out in the morning, arms laden with stuff, and return in the late afternoon.

This would go on without fail almost every day of Akihisa's stay.

And in the evenings, was the time his grandfather would zone out while sitting in the porch, thinking all those deep thoughts adults do.

Akihisa liked to imitate the elder Yoshii, but to no avail each time. He got restless after mere moments, while his grandfather was a picture of serenity.

Invariably, Akihisa then nudge or poke his grandfather to declare his boredom. His grandfather would be ready with an old quote or two on the virtues of patience. It was this time, Akihisa liked to pout and playfully mimic his grandfather's voice. Both would end up doubled up, laughing hard.

But the routine came to an abrupt end, two days before the summer holidays ended.

Akihisa's grandfather stared into space as usual.

Except after a short while, his face clouded over into anger.

He started mumbling to himself about something that was demanded by the circumstances. A quick end. Something for the greater good.

Akihisa stood by, nonplussed, as his grandfather went into a fit of rage and stomped into his small bedroom.

"Grandpa... Is anything wrong?"

Akihisa's grandfather stayed quiet, taking a box of crumbling documents from a cupboard.

And tore them up one by one. Meticulously, carefully, into small pieces.

A scrap flew onto Akihisa's foot. He read it curiously, but couldn't understand what it was about. U-235?

After a while, with all the papers torn, Akihisa's grandfather finally calmed down, breathing hard, body trembling from the sudden exertion.

Akihisa was worried. His grandfather was old, he shouldn't have been doing this.

"Grandfather..."

"I'm fine... Just..Just help me tidy these up,"

Akihisa did as asked and soon enough the place was spotless.

But Akihisa was still puzzled. During the clean-up, he stumbled upon a medal lying at the bottom of the now-empty box.

A 'Congressional Medal of Honor'.

Confusion reigned in Akihisa's mind. Medal...of Honor?

He asked what it was, but the questions were brushed aside by his grandfather.

Instead, Akihisa's grandfather gave it to him. Pressed it into his palms.

"I don't want it anymore, Akihisa. This...It hurts to keep it...Those poor souls,"

Akihisa accepted it happily, like a child does when receiving a gift. His grandfather wasn't finished yet though.

He rooted around in another box and brought out a brass locket.

His grandfather opened it, revealing a grainy photograph of a smiling four-year-old kid with blond hair like Akihisa.

"Is that me, Grandpa?"

Surprisingly, tears started streaming down Akihisa' grandfather's wizened old face.

"He was just like you..."

It wrenched Akihisa's heart to see his grandfather cry.

"Grandpa, don't cry!"

"They took him away...he was only four..."

"I'm still here, Grandpa!"

"Those men..."

"Grandpa!"

His grandfather was already in another world.

Confusing? Maybe, but hopefully the next chapter will clear things up. Also, sorry for the short as hell first chapter.
