It's Always a Good Time For a Story
"Mama" Came a small voice in the middle of the night.
Jackie opened her eyes.
"Hi Buddy." Jackie said to Houston who was standing next to the bed.
Jackie glanced at the clock on her nightstand, it read 2:30. Jackie again looked at her little boy, he was holding a book in his hand. She sat up slowly and rubbed her eyes. The second she sat up Houston excitedly climbed up onto the bed himself.
He stuck the book in Jackie's face.
"Sweetheart, it's two thirty in the morning, mommy will read you a story tomorrow morning when you get up."
Houston stuck out his lower lip and again stuck the book in her face.
Jackie smiled. I'm a teacher, I love that my little boy wants me to read to him, even if it is two thirty in the morning. Jackie thought silently to herself.
"Alright kiddo, mommy will read you the story, but let's go in your room so we don't wake daddy." Jackie said as she glanced at Nick who was sleeping soundly next to her.
She then climbed out of bed.
Houston scampered off the bed and excitedly followed her to his own room. Jackie sat down on his bed and the little boy rapidly climbed up onto the bed next to her.
"Baby." He said as he gave her tummy a gentle pat.
Jackie smiled at him "That's right, there's a baby in there." She told him.
He sat down on her lap, or at least he attempted too, but her growing belly got in the way.
He again glanced at her stomach but this time he frowned.
Jackie laughed "Is mommy's big tummy getting in the way?" she asked him.
"Yeah." The little boy replied back, sounding slightly frustrated.
"Here, try this." Jackie said as she grabbed him and gently sat him on her knee.
Houston smiled up at her and then laid his head against her chest.
"Are you ready for the story now?" she asked.
"Yeah." He said with a cute grin.
Jackie began reading the story and when she was done with the first two pages she lifted up the book and moved it from left to right, scanning it around the room. Houston looked at her as if she was crazy.
"Oops, sorry bud, mommy's losing her marbles, I'm so used to doing that so all the kids in mommy's class can see the pictures." She told the little boy as she set the book back down on his lap so he could see it.
"I really am tired." She thought to herself.
She continued reading the story. Houston studied the pictures in the book intently while Jackie read, which is why it surprised Jackie when he suddenly exclaimed "Dada."
"Daddy's sleeping." Jackie told him.
"No he's not." Came a voice from the doorway.
Jackie looked up and saw Nick standing in the doorway with a smile.
"Hi." Jackie said.
"Hi." Nick answered with a smile as he came over and sat down on the bed next to her.
Nick wrapped his arm around her.
She smiled and then continued reading the story.
When the story was over Jackie tucked Houston back into bed and then both she and Nick kissed Houston goodnight. Nick and Jackie then walked out of Houston's room.
"I'm exhausted." Jackie told Nick as they walked back into their own room and crawled into bed.
"At least you can sleep in tomorrow." Nick told her.
"Yeah that's one awesome thing about summer vacation." Jackie said.
Nick chuckled.
"Goodnight Nicky, I love you."
"Night Jacks, love you too." He replied.
They were both sound asleep within three minutes.
