The street lights couldn't penetrate the dark. The night was all around. Invading. Tainting. Rain fell so hard. Cold splashes into swollen rivers and muddy water buried roads. She could have been swimming. For all they knew she was drowning. Wet cloth stuck to her skin, wet money was crumpled in her hand. She jarred her knees as she fell to the concrete. She flung back her hair, from where it had been sheltering her face from the solid wall of rain.
Her mouth, throat, eyes and ears where made senseless. She could barely breath. Kneeling there, blind and deaf. Her airways blocked.
Still the scream came out. Beneath the roar of the water, as the dark moon shone down, it sounded. High pitched and angry.
No one heard.
