Zexion sighed again as he ran his hand through the cobalt fringe covering his face. He stared again at the scrolling figures on the computer screen; he would not sleep until he found the answer, not until he found a solution for this...madness.
He smelled someone nearing the lab: Vexen. Looking at the clock, he sighed. Too early in the morning and he was no where near finished. His strained eyes found their way back to the screen as Vexen entered.
"A bit late- or should I say early- to work, Zexion?" The chilly academic muttered, folding his arms across his chest.
"I apologize if I was keeping you up." Replied Zexion.
"No, you were not, however...you can't work forever like this. You need your rest."
Zexion curled his hand into a fist and opened a few documents, scanning them thoroughly.
"Don't you understand?" He asked Vexen through his teeth, "I will not stop until I find the answer, not until I find the cure for this...cancer killing me inside."
"A few minutes-"
"You don't understand." He let out an exasperated sigh and rubbed a hand over his tired eyes, "I will not waste minutes just sitting there and doing nothing when I'm running out of time."
"Currently, your running in circles."
"I may be running myself into the ground...but maybe things would make more sense if I did..."
Vexen sighed and scratched the side of his face with a bony finger. "You always were stubborn."
The boy was quiet, thinking slow and hard.
"Do I have to get Lexaeus to drag you out of here?" Vexen threatened.
Zexion snorted. "Good luck waking him up, he sleeps like a rock."
The scientist sighed again, knowing the conversation was pointless. He turned to face the door. "If you do fail, Zexion..." Vexen said, "Don't end your existence. And don't make someone else do it for you."
The cloaked schemer pinched the bridge of his nose and chuckled. "Now why would I do that?"
"Oh I don't know...emo people seem to have suicidal thoughts."
Zexion smirked. "Shut up, old man. No one cares about your opinions."
"Insolent brat." Vexen said, shaking his head. And then he left, leaving Zexion alone in the shadows with his thoughts.
