Into The West
Sgt White had no idea what he had done, it wasn't really him anymore. The thing controlling him was dangerous. Lt Col John Sheppard and his team were sent to hunt down and capture him. John got to the western balcony first; Teyla and Ronon would round the corner seconds later. John didn't see it coming. There was no warning, the bullet just hit him in the center of the chest.
Lay down,
your sweet and weary head.
Night is falling.
You have come to journey's end.
Teyla caught John as he fell, cushioning his landing with her body. Ronon took one look at the compromised sergeant and shot. The buzz of the blaster lost in the alarms cry of Rodney McKay.
Sleep now, and dream
of the ones who came before.
They are calling,
from across a distant shore.
Blood, there was so much blood. Ronon and Rodney knelt to the ground around their dying teammate who laid in Teyla's lap. John's lively hazel eyes were slowly clouding over. The brilliant colors of the sky mocked the somber scene below.
Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
Soon you will see.
All of your fears will pass away.
Safe in my arms,
you're only sleeping.
"Where the hell is Dr Beckett?" Rodney cried into the radio but the Scottish doctor was nowhere near their position. No one was. They were alone.
What can you see,
on the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea,
a pale moon rises.
The ships have come,
to carry you home.
"I'm just sorry... I'm not going to be here to...protect you anymore" John smiled as he struggled for breath. "Take care…of each other."
And all will turn,
to silver glass.
A light on the water.
All souls pass.
Teyla brought her soft hand to John's cheek and tried to smile as tears rolled down her cheeks. She didn't want John's last moments to be ones of sadness. Ronon was crying too, as much as he tried to hide it. Rodney just sat there in shock; he couldn't believe this was happening. John shouldn't, couldn't die.
Hope fades,
Into the world of night.
Through shadows falling,
Out of memory and time.
"It has… been an honor." John closed his eyes for a long moment and then opened them again. He looked into the western sky. The sun was setting, the colors dancing off of the glass-like water.
Don't say,
We have come now to the end.
White shores are calling.
You and I will meet again.
And you'll be here in my arms,
Just sleeping.
"Don't cry for me…I'm going home." Each breath John took was shorter and shorter.
What can you see,
on the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea,
a pale moon rises.
The ships have come,
to carry you home.
The colors of the sky and the water were brilliant bursts of pink, orange, purple and blue. The sun dipped into the ocean as John Sheppard breathed his last.
And all will turn,
to silver glass.
A light on the water.
Grey ships pass
Into the West.
