The barn was warmer in the light of the moon than in the heat of the sun. The already golden hay radiated a heat only there when a slow fire cackled nearby, which was. The horses halter chains had silenced for the night, and they sat lazily in their stalls, sleep crawling over them. Outside the barn there were distant footsteps of men with unfinished buisness and those wandering to clear their minds.

In a spot by the mounds of clean hay and within perfect veiw from the outside, George's strong defined arms wrapped around Curly's wife tenderly, and when he spoke his voice was as smooth as honey. There came a gentle gasp from the outside, barely reaching the two in embrace. The woman stareing in from the outside went by the name of Cassie, and her long sleek black hair fell around her shoulders, beautifully complementing her olive skin and dark brown eyes. She clutched the black shawl she had brought around her small shoulders, shivering from the coolness that was the night. She hadn't been feeling well since that morning and now apon seeing George with Curly's wife, she felt about ready to fall. Curly's wife, realizing the attention George was giving her, softened onto him.

"George?" She asked, looking up at him pleadingly. Cassie envied her curly red hair, her voice, and what she wore because it was seemingly what George wanted. What George loved. She turned away from the scene and took in a choked breath of cold air that seemed to give more hurt than comfort.

"Hmm?" He breathed out, making Curly's wife's knees go weak.

"I just want to talk."

A slight smirk showed on his lips before he looked over her shoulder, out the dark window, and into the face of the whore he had purposed to the night before. Her face was covered in hurt and regret.

Cassie pushed away from the window and stumbled away from the barn quickly, back to the whore house she thought she'd be leaving for good, but would be returning to now.

When George looked to find the whore missing he immediatly kissed Curly's wife and, his eyes softening only to convince her, he said "I have to go, Lennie'll be needin me soon." She sighed, dissapointed but understanding.

George made his way out of the barn with Curly's wife watching him all the way, her eyes following his broad, tough shoulders and melting at the thought of them. George saw Cassie looking from left to right, trying to pass the street at the fence so she could start on her way. George walked slowly over to her, knowing he didnt have to hurry because she'd have to wait there for quite a while, could never be too safe.

When he got behind her he grabbed her elbow and held onto it tightly. "Come." He comanded and walked her into the dark shadows of the trees close by.

"Just leave me alone George, you obviously love her!" Cassie nearly screamed out of pain. She could not bare to look at him so she turned her body away and her hands went to her face, trying to keep from crying, though he still held onto her.

"What does it matter." He said rolling his eyes as if she were stupider than he had previously thought she was.

"Why are you doing this?" She pleaded, close to tears and her voice getting weaker as her knees began to give out. He wrapped an arm around her waist to keep her on her feet.

"Would you pull yourself together? Who cares if I hold another woman? I'm going to marry you arn't I?" He was trying to make her feel better but instead the words slashed at her already low self condifence that appeared when she was around him. Though she felt betrayed and crushed, she still loved being in his arms and holding onto his chest the way she was now. She felt safe, protected.
