CHAPTER 1: THE ALLIANCE

Working for the government isn't the best job. Especially when you know that something big is coming. When you know a plan that could destroy you. My name is Max, short for Mia Maxwell. Yes I am a girl (duh) and I live in the world of Panem. My dad is Gale Hawthorne and my mother is Johanna Mason. I guess no one really knows what happened after the rebellion that Katniss Everdeen lead. After that, I guess everyone went back to District 12. Everything was going well and Peeta and Katniss decided to, well you know...have kids. First they had a girl named Evelyn. 2 years later, they had a boy named Ace. A year later,Gale and Johanna decided to have me. As you all know, Gale loved Katniss but she didn't love him back and blah blah blah, but! I bet you don't know the rest of the story. I was born in District 12, and I have known Katniss and her family since infancy. My father told me that when they first told him that they were going to have a baby, Katniss and Peeta were so happy, that they wanted us to go live with them. My father instantly rejected the offer. Since then, I only catch Ace look at me in the halls at school, at the bakery, in the streets. My father taught me how to hunt just as he did. I sometimes catch her in the woods, scaring off my prey with her misleading arrows. I think she has only seen me once in the woods. I don't know what I would do if the peace keepers caught me. Or I mean us. It's not like I have ever seen Ace go swimming in the hidden lake or when he runs through the hidden trail shirtless… It's nothing like that. I have always realized my chances with him as zero. I mean like, the way he walks, and the way he stares, and when he brushes his hair back with his hands. There is no way I have any chance. He's just so popular at school and is always on tv. He's never needed anything and well… I have. I have always needed food, and cloths and other things I can't afford. He has everything. He is the most popular boy at school, he has the looks, and the family. He has everything. Now I am here, in the woods thinking about all of this when I hear footsteps behind me. I stand up and run to the bushes to hide. My heart leaps in my throat when I see Peeta, Katniss, Evelyn, and Ace appear from behind the bushes. I reach over my shoulder to draw my arrow… oh no! My bow is over there! AGHHHHH! Wait, did I just hear Peeta ask what is that? He is getting too near to my bow. My possession. Before I can react, I leap out of the bush and snatch the bow from his hands. But then someone pins me to the ground and stabs me in my left ear. Dang that hurts! I cry out for help, but only to find that Evelyn is the one who is about to slaughter me.

"Are you scared little girl? Do you want your mommy?"

I struggle to loosen her grip, but when I finally do, I draw an arrow back, and aim for Evalyn.

"Max?"

Oh no. She knows. She knows me. I keep my aim up, tight jaw against my, now bruised and bloody cheek.

"Max! Mia Maxwell! You come to the bakery all the time to trade rabbits for bread!"

Oh no. Not now, please god. Good thing that it was dark outside. That way they couldn't see me very well.

"Yes you! Mia Maxwell. I see you all the time at school" Ace says.

Did he just…?

"Looks like someone is…"

"Evy! Shut up!"

Evy just gave Ace the death look.

"Hey thanks for not slaughtering me out there." I say in a sarcastic tone.

"No problem!" Someone behind me says. Who is that?

"Dad?" Oh no. My dad was here all along? I just look at Katniss with the death glare, just as I was saying "How could you?"

"Well" she starts "We all had something to tell you and your family"

"What now" I ask "Another new member to the family" I say sarcastically

To my luck, Evan showed up as well, but he was clearly paying more attention to Evy than to me, my best friend and hunting partner. He has liked Evy since they were in kindergarten. I guess he also knows that he doesn't have a chance with her like I don't with Ace. Evy is 5'7, tall with black, straight, smooth hair down to her middle back. She has dark, brown eyes that could kill, and a killer smile. On the other hand, Evan is 5'11, tall and broad shoulders, muscular arms, brown short hair, black eyes. I hear girls at school talk about kissing him at school. On the other hand, I am rather 5'4, short and petti with light brown long, below butt length hair with natural bronze highlights and smooth waves, plus green eyes. Ace is well… extraordinary. He is 6'1, tall and with a soft tan to his skin, black hair, with the sweetest smile. Except he barely ever smiles. He may seem like a weak one, but when he lifts up the flour bags at the market, or when I see him jog through the forest, he may be more muscular than Evan himself. I didn't realize I was daydreaming until someone nibbles my ear.

"Hey beautiful."

Oh god. Its Ace. Why did he call me beautiful? What is going on?

"You know I don't deserve to be called something like that."

"Listen, times running out. I need to tell you something very important."

I'm getting scared…

"President Snow's granddaughter survived the war. She has taken power and is forcing the games to be back… and she succeeded."

I stay frozen.

"And what does that mean for us?"

He only looks down, presses his lips together and looks down at me. Please don't, I whisper in my head. Before I can stop this from happening, he bends down and kisses me, softly and gentle. He pulls back and looks me straight in the eye. I think I was about to pass out when he told me…

"We are going to the games and I have no choice."

When I hear that, I immediately turn around and see someone with a gun, and then I see Ace collapse to the ground, and then my world goes dark.
