His Frown

Tamaki wore a smile like it was a part of him.

He was a naturally bright person, a dramatic person, a bouncy person. His smile changed constantly, but it was almost a permanent fixture. When he frowned, it was not a real frown, but an affectation, or a look of contemplation, or a ploy to get a girl's attention. Everyone knew that a frown from Tamaki was not permanent, that it would be gone within minutes, seconds even.

But today was different.

Tamaki had been frowning since his arrival at school this morning, and it was a frown that no one had seen before. He was distracted, sitting on the window sill of the third music room, staring at nothing in particular.

The other members of the host club sat on the other side of the room, talking in whispers.

"What's wrong with the lord?"

"Is Tama-chan ok?"

"I've never seen him like this before."

Haruhi sat with her back to the wall, not paying much attention to their discussion. Her eyes were on Tamaki, and her mind was full of speculation.

Maybe he is sick? Or maybe his grandmother said something. More likely, a girl turned him down. That would be right.

She was lost in her thoughts, and didn't notice when everyone else left the room in search of lunch. When she finally snapped out of her reverie, she was on her own, and Tamaki was no longer sitting by the window.

She looked around, searching for him. It took her a few seconds to notice that he was now right beside her. She jumped.

"Tamaki-senpai! You scared me!"

He didn't reply, but his head turned slowly to look at her. She decided to try again.

"What is the matter, senpai? Why do you look like that? Are you ill? Did someone hurt you?"

He blinked, and a slightly confused look flashed in his eyes. He shook his head, opened his mouth as if to say something, then closed it again, shaking his head. Haruhi wasn't going to let it go.

"Tell me what is wrong, senpai."

He looked at her for a few brief seconds, biting his lip, before finally answering.

"It hurts, Haruhi."

"What hurts?"

"Love hurts. It's like a knife is my gut, cascading waves of pain through my fragile body. It haunts my sleep, and it stalks my waking hours. I can't get away from it!"

Even when he's sad, he's still a drama queen, thought Haruhi, before the meaning behind what he had said struck home.

Tamaki was in love.

As she ran the thought through her mind a few times, she felt a small pang of jealousy and confusion. She shook it off.

"Senpai. Are you honestly telling me you are in love? With who?"

There were a few moments of silence as he simply looked at her, and her eyes widened as he moved towards her. His eyes fluttered shut as he placed a soft kiss of her lips, then pulled back and got to his feet.

She stared up at him as a smile broke over his features.

"Guess."
