"So take these words
And sing out loud
"Cause everyone's forgiven now
"Cause tonight's the night
The world begins again"
Better Days/Goo Goo Dolls
The heart shaped face, bright blue eyes and undying optimism continue to repel him by day and enamor him by night. It is nighttime now so the rules have changed. There is no petty arguing or name-calling. There is just him and her, and the park after sunset.
"How do you know things will get better?"
"Things always get better. Eventually".
Her assurance is solid, her smile contagious. And Mamoru knows that no matter what her test scores say, she knows things most adults never will.
"Oh, look! A shooting star!", her shout within a whisper is full of reverence and girlish excitement. And when her eyes close and her hands form fists at her sides, Mamoru knows she is making a wish.
"I hope you get what you need, Mamoru", she is heartbreakingly sincere and he has a feeling she didn't use her wish on herself. "You know," she ponders, as she spins on her feet so that she faces the lake."The dark normally scares me but not now. Not here with you. I think I like the night better."
Out of all the mysteries in his life, she's the one he wants to solve the most.
"Why?"
"Think about it. If it never got this dark then the moon and stars would never be this bright".
He does not remember his parents, his childhood, or where he comes from and where he's going. All he knows is that Usagi could find the light in a black hole and that is enough. She stares straight into the zenith and when the moon highlights her profile she looks achingly familiar. His desperation to tell her this is overshadowed as always.
Silent words know no rejection.
"But you're not afraid of the dark, are you?".
Her voice is teasing, her eyes lit up with youthful mischief.
He smiles yet he is serious.
"Not anymore".
A/N: Alright, so here's the deal. I was reading the beginnings of Mamoru and Usagi's love story in the English version of the manga (I'm American but prefer using the original names) and this is what came out. I would love to do a long-term fic that loosely followed canon with a unique twist. But I'm out of ideas, so review and tell me if you like my writing style, think I should try to write more or if I have the characters down or not.
Thanx. :)
