A Surprising Phone Call
Jackie was having a very pleasant dream, but it was rudely interrupted by the shrill ringing of her phone.
It took her a second to register what was happening, when she realized what the noise was she glanced at the clock on the side of her bed and her heart dropped, it was 2:30 in the morning, this very well could be bad news.
When she glanced at the caller ID on her cell phone it was a number she did not recognize.
"Hello?" she asked wearily.
"Hi, Mrs. Stokes." Came a small voice, a voice she recognized.
"Connor?" She asked just to be sure.
"Yep it's me."
Jackie stifled a laugh.
At the beginning of every school year Jackie gave the parents of the students in her class her cell phone number in case of an emergency.
"Mrs. Stokes, I need your help."
"What's wrong Connor?" She asked, her voice now filled with worry.
"My birthday is next week and I want my mom to take me swimming but when I asked her she said maybe, that always means no so I want you to tell her to take me swimming, she will listen to you."
Before Jackie had a chance to answer Jackie heard a woman's voice ask. "Connor, who are you talking to?"
"Mrs. Stokes." The child replied as if it was perfectly natural to be talking to his teacher at 2:30 in the morning.
"You called your teacher, why?"
"Because I want her to tell you to take me swimming for my birthday."
"Oh good gravy." His mother replied before she took the phone from him. "I am so sorry." The woman told Jackie.
"That's quite alright." Jackie assured her with a chuckle.
"Once again I am sorry, have a good night."
"You as well." Jackie answered.
After that the phone call ended and Jackie was relieved that everyone from the lab was safe and she was also happy that nothing was wrong at Connor's house!
