May's red eyes were scaring me; I kept trying to look away but I couldn't, I couldn't stop staring. I mean I didn't know much about vampires but I knew that when their eyes were deep red they were hungry, thirsty. I wondered if Alice noticed that her new 'friends' eyes were giving off all the warning signs; I tried to grab her attention. Alice sat opposite me, she seemed to be reading the newspaper, and I stared at the bold headline on the front cover;

'Five more people murdered in Dartmouth'

I knew what was really going on in Dartmouth, I knew those weren't murders committed by a human, they were committed by a vampire. I kicked Alice under the table, Alice gasped at looked at me; her face turning into a disapproving frown; I raised my eyebrows at her then nodded towards May.

''what is it Bella?'' Alice asked, I scowled at her,

''nothing'' I grumbled but she kept staring at me, I nodded towards May again. Alice cocked her head to the left slightly. ''Bella, I'm finding it hard to understand what your bizarre eye movements mean''

For goodness sake! It wasn't that hard, I sighed ''nothing, really... its nothing.'' Alice smiled politely then carried on reading the news paper, ''well it can't get any worse than this!'' she said nodded towards the Dartmouth story.

I rolled my eyes ''If you think things can't get worse it's probably only because you lack sufficient imagination.'' I scowled in Alice's direction, hoping my rudeness would grab her attention; but she carried on reading.

Suddenly May slammed both fists onto the table, she looked at Alice then at me ''I need to get out of here, there's something... something-'' she broke off and closed her eyes. Alice put down the news paper and put one hand on May's back ''Bella, could you give me and May a minute?'' she wasn't looking at me; she was frowning at Mays pale face. I nodded and left the room, as I shut the door behind me. Should I listen at the door? Surely Alice would tell me what they were discussing anyway? I decided to leave it and ask later. But suddenly the door opened and Alice stood beside the now open door, she turned to me her eyes sad ''you'll have to leave Bella, it's no longer safe here for you''

I stared confused ''why? What's happened?'' but Alice was already rushing me towards the door, I shook my hand out of her grip and glared at her ''Alice! What's happened?''

Alice stared at me, she sighed slightly ''it's May, she's done a very bad thing'' she shook her head ''I know it's not her fault, I mean she's just transformed but-'' Alice took my hands in hers and stared deep into my eyes ''she's killed in La Push, a hiker...''

I gasped, I couldn't think; couldn't breathe. She's murdered here? She's killed in La Push? Then suddenly a pang of terror hit me in the chest like a racket ''what about the treaty?''

Alice dropped my hands and hugged me, she spoke in barely a whisper ''I don't Bella, I think we've got a war on our hands''
