Riza aimed carefully. Her target: a middle-aged Ishbalan man. The sash slung across his chest marked him as a warrior priest—a dangerous enemy to the Amestrian army. This was no stuffed dummy at the training grounds of the academy. He was a living, breathing human. And she had to kill him. I have to do this. It's the only way. Biting her lip, Riza fired.
The bullet hit its mark. The Ishbalan stood for a few painful moments, as if taking in the fact that he was now dead, then collapsed on the ground, the perfect round hole in his forehead seeping crimson liquid into his tuft of white hair.
My first kill. Riza stared. Even though he was the enemy. Still—discipline stepped in. She scanned the war zone for her next victim.
BANG!
Nine. I've shot nine now. The sudden shock of killing someone had now faded to a numb pain that lasted for only a few seconds. I've killed nine and it's only a little after noon. She spotted a shadow sneaking along an alleyway. Moments later, a cautious head poked out into the open to observe the street. Red eyes flitted back and forth under white bangs.
BOOM!
Ten.
Riza's shift was finally over. She wearily made her way to her tent and flopped down on her cot, not even a little bit hungry.
Twenty-four…wait. Was it twenty-four? Or twenty-five? Twenty-three? With a start, she realized she'd lost count. I can remember them all…there was the priest, the man in the alley…the—the woman in the window…and also… Weariness overtook Riza as she drifted off to sleep while counting off.
In her dreams that night and many nights after, the dead came to take revenge on their murderer, swirling around and morphing into one another, moaning, taunting, snarling, attacking; even after Riza had stopped counting.
A/N: Short, no? Oh well. I said what I wanted to say...I hope. What do you think? Review please! :)
