First Date

--

It was late July, and quite late in the evening. The boardwalk was unusually desolate, all the adolescents having gone home to meet their curfews. In the midst of the light crowd, there were two women walking together.

Brooke Davis had invited her new roommate and one of her best friends, Rachel Gatina, to have dinner on the boardwalk. However, in Brooke's usual fashion, she hadn't allowed Rachel even a glimpse of what they would be doing after their dinner - a cheap hotdog and a bag of chips. Instead, Brooke had slipped her hand around Rachel's and opted to pull her along as she headed toward the beach, trying to squash down a childlike excitement that had settled in her chest. A breeze caused Rachel to complain, saying that she would become a 'human popsicle' before she even approached the water - not that she would anyway, she had said. But Rachel's words had fallen on deaf ears, for Brooke had already let go of her hand and was throwing her shoes somewhere behind her.

Brooke waited for Rachel to do the same, before she rushed into the water, throwing all caution to the wind. Her feet had barely gotten wet, and she had stopped to adjust to the numbing temperature. Rachel had snuck up behind her and pushed her forward slightly. Brooke tripped and fell right into the water, splashing and loudly yelling a few inappropriate words in Rachel's direction. Though she was laughing, Rachel hadn't expected that, and she apologetically offered a helping hand.

She'd certainly gotten one in the form of payback. She had landed on top of Brooke, who had been laughing. Rachel slid off of her and sat next to her, crossing her legs as she tried to ring out her hair. It was no use, and she gave up. Instead, she watched as Brooke looked up, and followed her gaze. The stars were shining bright, like Brooke's eyes had all night…

When Rachel looked back, Brooke was looking at her, a ghost of a smile on her face. After that, they had gotten out of the water and headed back to the house. Instead of going inside, they sat on the porch, letting their feet dangle through the railing. They hadn't been sitting there for more than five minutes, before Brooke had started laughing. Rachel had just looked at her, amused but questioning.

"Some first date, huh, Elmo?" Brooke had asked, looking at her friend.

"Is that what this was?" Rachel had replied, only raising an eyebrow.

Brooke could've sworn she smiled, but it was gone as if she had blinked it away. The look in her eyes, though, said more than her face had.

It couldn't have gone better.
