When he first met Ronon, he was reminded of a stray, but when he heard his story, he considered him to be one of the greatest warriors he'd ever met.
He thinks back to the time they made videos of themselves to their 'loved ones' just before the Wraith attack. He thinks how he had said there was no one back on earth that would miss him. That had been the truth. He didn't have a family. Well not on earth anyway.
