Roses are red
Except when they're pink.
I really like you
What do you think?
The note was just sitting there on his desk, looking all innocent. But he knew better. The frilly white edging and girly heart shape would have given it away, even if the poem hadn't been there for everyone to see.
Ewww...it had little pink hearts drawn on it, and the worst thing - the very worst thing of all - was that it was signed with a kiss! Ewww!
And of course, all the other boys were teasing him now, saying he had a girlfriend. And all the girls were giggling at him whenever he walked past them. This was just the worst day of his life!
Girls were so stupid. All of them. He knew his brother, Jed, would say that was silly and that one day he would like a girl, but he knew better. Jed thought he knew everything just because he was fifteen, and Kid was only seven, but Kid didn't believe that. He would never like a girl, and he would certainly never kiss one like Jed had. He had heard Jed bragging to some of his friends that he had kissed Jenny Watkins after the harvest dance last week. That was just disgusting!
He wished the teacher would hurry up and dismiss school for the day so he could go home. There, she was giving the upper level their homework, and then he could go.
As soon as the teacher dismissed them, he jumped up from his desk and hurried outside, barely remembering not to run inside the schoolhouse. As soon as he got outside though, he ran towards home as fast as he could.
About halfway home, he finally had to stop and take a breath. He heard footsteps on the path behind him, and a few seconds later a girl with long blonde hair came into view. She was running towards him.
"Kid! Kid wait up!" she cried, waving the note he had left behind on his desk. "Kid, don't you like my valentine?" she asked when she finally caught up to him.
Kid looked at her, ready to tell her that she was silly. Why would he like it? That would mean he liked girls, and girls were stupid.
But instead of telling her that, he just shrugged.
"Sure I liked it, Doritha," he said.
"Come on, Kid," she grabbed his hand. "Race you to the creek. I bet I can beat you!" She took off running toward the creek.
Kid grinned and ran after here. Maybe girls weren't so bad after all.
A/N: I found this story in an old notebook. Discovering stories I had completely forgotten about writing has been really fun!
