"These scars run deep and they cover me
Like an open wound without breathing room
I can't heal like this but it's you I miss
This war won't end"
-Chiodos "Vacation To Hell"
Why couldn't they just both open their eyes and see that their feelings were mutual? Maybe they knew. Maybe they were just too damn stubborn to admit it.
Didn't he see how it killed her when he flirted with various girls? Of course he did. That was the whole reason why he did it. Teddy knew damn well how it damaged Lily's heart every single time he would grin that goofy grin or give that extra long hug to one of those girls. He liked to see how jealous he could make Lily; he liked to know that the girl who had never fallen hard for a boy before had fallen for him. Teddy enjoyed to play with her heart - tossing it around, dropping a few times here and there, but he always picked it up and brushed it off. He always picked it up and that made it so hard for her to heal.
She was just as guilty as he was, though. Every single time he tried to give her his heart, she would reach forward, making him believe that maybe, just maybe, she would take it this time, but she never did. Lily always pulled her hand away right before she could claim her prize and smiled at him as she watched the spark of love in his eyes go out. Every time he would desperately try and hint, but never telling her outright, that he was interested in her, she would just shoot him that careless smirk and shake her head. Lily would intentionally talk with other guys when she knew damn well that Teddy was looking because she liked to see that jealous look on his face, just like he did. She would tell him all about how funny this guy was and how cute that guy was just to piss him off. But what she wouldn't tell him was that not one of those silly boys could ever compare to him…
So even now as she watched him coo and caw over his newest girlfriend, she still wanted him. Those foolish girls were just temporary; they never lasted too long. Lily would not deny, though, that she did feel slightly envious of those giggling girls. The feeling never stayed very long, though. She knew that Teddy didn't care about those girls like he cared about her - he never joked around with them like he did when he was with her. Lily knew that sooner or later he would drop that feebleminded girl - he always did. Teddy always would make some lame excuse about why it didn't work out. "Too clingy," "Too serious," "Too - too whatever…" He would come crawling back to her like nothing was wrong, like he had never been with what's-her-name. And Lily would play her usual part, reeling him in only to shut him out before he got too close. Maybe someday they would quit playing with each other's heart but, unfortunately, that didn't seem very likely. This hopeless war of mind games and heartbreaks would never end.
