Lily Evans was sitting in the Heads dorm on a cold Friday night in December.
The holiday fever was setting into Hogwarts, and no one could wait for Christmas break. Except for Lily
She was doing a potions essay, when a mysterious thing caught her eye.
On the coffee table, the marauders map was open and displaying the names of Hogwarts' students.
I know what you're thinking, "Oh my god! Why would James leave that lying around?"
But, Lily knew about the map, she knew about their hiding places, she knew that Remus was a werewolf.
No, what she found strange was that on a corner of the 4th floor, the names of Avery, Potter, Black, Snape, Mulciber, and Lupin were moving around.
She dropped her quill, threw the heads room door open, and ran through the hallways using some passageways she had recently found.
And it worked, apparently, because in 30 seconds flat she was walking down the hallway towards the familiar muffled voices.
She was expecting to see them dueling, or fighting, or at least name-calling. She was right, or at least, half-right.
They each looked intensely at their enemies. They were all clutching their wands.
Remus was the first to notice Lily.
"Lily, what are you doing here."
"I could ask you all the same question, it's after hours."
"Came to join the fight, Evans?" sneered Avery
"Nothing to see here, just run along back to your dorm." Said Snape calmly
"Don't tell me where I should run along to." She said, mocking
"He'll tell the mudblood to do whatever he wants." Mulciber argued
And with that the first fire was shot, well the first two. She couldn't tell who reacted first, James or Sirius.
But they were both aimed at Mulciber and he slumped to the ground.
It didn't take much after that to get Avery down, with it being three against two.
Snape, being alone, took the opportunity to back away, and kept switching his wands' direction from James to Sirius to Lupin, and finally, set it on Lily.
Lily, surprised by his action, laughed with a cruel expression on her face," What are you gonna do Snape, kill me?"
"Go on, do your worst."
He lowered his wand
"That's what I thought."
"You're not even worth it. You're with them now." Pointing to the marauders
"Oh yeah? And who are you with?"
Silence.
"Who are you with?" she repeated
She grabbed his right arm, and pushed the sleeve back for them all to see.
Sure enough, there was a newly formed dark mark.
She dropped his arm as if it was the giant squids' tentacle.
"Wait, lily I ca-"
"Stop! Just get out of here." James said
"He's right. Never talk to me ever again. You've chosen your path, and I've chosen mine." She paused, "You disgust me."
He turned and sped down the hallway faster than any emotion could fill his face.
An awkward silence filled the room. All of the marauders stared at lily, but all she could look at was the retreating form of Severus Snape.
A small cat rounded the corner behind them, and they all froze.
It was Filches cat. They could hear his footsteps approaching.
James flung the Invisibility cloak out of his pocket, and they all squeezed together underneath it.
Filch walked around the corner and stopped just feet from them. He looked around, but continued walking.
"Lets Get back before we find anyone else." Said Remus
They hurried back to the heads' dorm.
"So, Snape's a death eater, what else were you expecting Lily?" asked Sirius
"I don't know, I just thought- he's only seventeen for Merlin sake!"
"Voldemort's building an army and Snape is weak enough to join that army. So what?"
"So he's going to die!"
"Who cares?"
"I d-"
And then she realized, for the first time ever, Lily didn't care. Lily spent her whole life worrying over Snape and finally she was done.
This war would go on, no matter what side Snape was on. She has to worry about herself for once.
