He called her on the road From a lonely cold hotel room…
Uzumaki Kushina answered the phone on the fourth ring. She always answered on the fourth ring. Why? She didn't know. "Hello?"
Just to hear her say 'I love you'
One more time…
"Kushina-chan?"
"Minato-kun! How are you?" Kushina asked, her eyes sparkling with happiness.
"I'm fine. How are you?"
"I'm fine, Minato-kun," Kushina said, puzzled at his worried tone. "Are you alright?"
"Yeah. I just wanted to hear you say 'I love you'."
Kushina smiled in relief. "I love you, Minato-kun."
But when he heard the sound
Of the kids laughing in the background…
"Is Naruto-chan there?"
"Yeah. Hold on, I'll get him." Kushina went to the backdoor and called for Naruto.
He had to wipe a tear
From his eye…
Four-year-old Uzumaki Naruto ran into the house. He took the phone from his mother.
A little voice came on the phone
Said…
"Daddy, when you coming home?" Naruto asked.
He said the first thing
That came to his mind…
"I'm already there! Take a look around. I'm the sunshine in you hair. I'm the shadow on the ground. I'm the whisper on the wind. I'm you imaginary friend. And I know I'm in your prayers. Oh, I'm already there," Minato replied.
Naruto smiled, whispered an 'I love you,' and gave the phone back to his mother. Then he ran back outside to his friends.
Kushina smiled and put the phone up to her ear.
She got back on the phone
Said…
"I really miss you darling. Don't worry about the kids, they'll be alright," Kushina said with tears in her eyes. "Wish I was in your arms, lying right there beside you. But I know that I'll be in your dreams tonight."
Kushina's tears fell down her face as she listened to Minato sing.
"And I'll gently kiss your lips. Touch you with my fingertips. So turn out the light and close you eyes.
"I'm already there! Don't make a sound. I'm the beat in your heart. I'm the moonlight shining down. I'm the whisper in the wind, and I'll be there until the end. Chan you feel the love that we share? Oh, I'm already there!"
Kushina started to sing. "We may be a thousand miles apart. But I'll be with you, wherever you are."
Minato continued. "I'm already there! Take a look around."
"I'm the sunshine in your hair," Kushina sang.
"I'm the shadow on the ground," Minato sang.
"I'm the whisper in the wind," Kushina sang.
"And I'll be there until the end," Minato sang.
Then they sang together. "Can you feel the love that we share? Oh, I'm already there!"
Sixteen-year-old Naruto stirred in his sleep, but didn't wake.
Outside his window, the spirits of Kushina and Minato hovered, hand in hand, smiling as they watched their son sleep.
As dawn broke, they turned into two white butterflies and flew off into the rising sun.
"Oh, I'm already…There…"
