Summary: Sam didn't like the idea of being used as a Meat Suit, but he understood why Heaven and Hell had chosen them that way.

I UNDERSTAND

As much as Sam hated and refused to accept the idea of being Lucifer's Vessel, and fully understood Dean's vehement dismissal of his brother becoming Michael's, he could understand the reasoning behind it.

Dean was the obedient son, the one who never questioned, who always obeyed, no matter how vague or unreasonable the order. He did what their father told him, even if it made no sense, even if he and Sam had no idea what they were supposed to be doing, simply because Dad told them to. End of discussion.

Sam was the rebel, the one who always wanted to know 'why'. He didn't want to be a hunter just because the rest of his family was. His father wanted revenge. Dean loved the thrill. Sam didn't. Sam was the one who broke with the rest of the family, who ran away to try to do what he wanted, because he had his own vision for life, screw what Dad said.

Dean was the oldest, the one in charge when Dad was away, just as the Archangel Michael was in charge of the Heavenly Hosts, who lead then in God's place.

Sam was the one who questioned the order of things, who felt, who cared too much, who baulked at the idea of taking orders 'just because'. Lucifer had questioned, had disobeyed, and had been cast out for his crime.

Sam had a darker side to him, Demon blood running through his veins, which probably didn't help his case, even if his intentions were good.

Dean might drive an angel to drink and a cursing rant, and St Jude was probably sick of hearing Dean's name, but at least Dean always did what was needed and morally right.

Sam didn't like even the vague suggestion of being anyone's Vessel, much less that of the Morningstar, but he understood why Michael and Lucifer had chosen as they did.

He still thought that Heaven and Hell could shove their demands somewhere unpleasant and leave the Winchester Brothers alone, though.

A/N: OK, so I was watching seasons 4 and 5, and it got me thinking. If Sam is generally seen as the 'nice, good guy' and Dean as the 'rebel bad boy', why was Dean chosen as Michael's vessel? Why was the nice brother chosen to be Lucifer's? Just my take on things.

Thanks, Nat
