Chapter 1

The Strigoi closed in around me. Great, there had to be at least 7. I was already worn out from killing Isaiah and Elena and now, with just my luck, this group shows up. I pulled out a stake I'd found and jumped at the Strigoi in front of me, faked, and dodged back, swept out a stake, slicing open a vampire's cheek, rewarded with a scream of agony. While he was distracted by his burning cheek, I staked him.

There goes one. Six left,

I think to myself as I spin on my heel and kick the closest creature in the knee. He must have been Awakened not too long ago, which meant he wasn't very strong. My kick made him stumble a bit and it was enough, except for the fact that his arm was in the way of his heart. I swing my arm and cut a slit from his elbow to wrist and he moved it enough to give me and opening. I shoved my stake in his heart.

Five.

Strong arms wrapped around my waist and pulled me back. Turns out they weren't planning on killing me now. That meant I was being saved as either a snack for later or am going to be Awakened. Great, not the best options. I struggled but the Strigoi was too strong. I slashed my stakes, tearing at his arm, but, even though he was screaming in pain, he kept his tight hold on me.

Suddenly, I was dropped. I jumped back up and turned around, ready to kill but found that my attacker was already dead.

The person I saw standing behind the dead vampire was someone that had died about an hour ago.

The person I knew loved me.

Mason.
