I was always listening.

"I will sing for your sake,

For your eternal repose.

I will sing... forever."

Long hair the color of moonlight drifted sluggishly on the breeze, as though dancing to the haunting song. The dark night seemed wrapped around her like the tattered cloak she wore, following her through the town as bare feet touched lightly on cobblestones. All the windows were shuttered, every door bolted. She was alone, and she did not care.

"I will pray for your light,

Anywhere that it goes.

I will pray for you... forever."

Rose-tinted lips were curled in a smile as she moved through the dark streets, where plates of bread were set out by every doorway. Her eyes, deep and clear as the night sky, searched for the light of vanishing souls, so she could carry them away to the dawn.

Her name was San, but no one knew that. The only person who had known her name was gone now, and so the people who saw her called her what they called the one who sang before her.

They called her Death.

"In my hands I will take

The small light that still shines,

And carry it away to the dawn.

With the night as my company,

Untouched by time,

I will bring you to sleep with this song."

The sun never rose where she was. Her body never aged. She had made a promise, many years ago. A promise she intended to keep. For his sake, for his wish... she had become a Requiem Singer.
