The Silence of a Broken Heart

There was so much I wanted to say to him. Instead we stood in silence, both tucking our hearts away before we returned. In the distance I heard him say, "two to beam up." I silently wondered if the tears in the corners of my eyes would materialize or remain with my heart on New Earth.
On the bridge I issued a litany of commands, disguising my agony in efficiency. The tension in his jaw betrayed his pain.
As we reached for the console, his pinky brushed my hand. A physical reminder of all we had lost. It was gone and we were here.
