Sometimes Edward wondered how things would've turned out if they hadn't tried to revive their mother.
There was the obvious of course. He would have kept his flesh and bone limbs, and Al wouldn't have had to suffer being a suit of armor.
But there were other things that had happened as well. For starters, they had both gained the ability to transmute without a drawn circle - a gift some might kill for.
And they'd both ended up changing an entire country. Would Amestris have met the same fate as Xerxes did if they hadn't been dragged into the middle of things? There really was no way of knowing for sure.
It was always possible that someone would've found out Father's plan. Isaac the Freezer had, after all. But then again, it brought up the question of whether another person would actually have been able to do something about it.
But what he pondered the most was what the two of them would've become - assuming Amestris wasn't destroyed, of course.
Al was quiet and soft-spoken, like their mother. He probably would've settled down somewhere and had a peaceful life - probably in the very house that the two of them had grown up in.
But what about himself?
He'd always had a thirst for knowledge. Human Transmutation or not, he probably would've joined the State Alchemists when he was old enough just so he could have access to that library.
But he doubted he would've still had that policy against killing. After all, the reason he chose never to take a life is because he'd learned just how important each human life was.
He'd discovered the true value of a human soul on that fateful night.
