Chapter 1.- Why am I not surprised?
Our story begins in the city of Petropolis, a place which was known for being one of the biggest spicy cesspools of crime and villainy in the entire world. Fortunately for its residents, the criminals there were not so dangerous.
However, two days ago, the best Interpol agent, Detective Carmelita Montoya Fox-Cooper had received intel that one of their old enemies, the infamous gangster dog known as Muggshot was in Petropolis, and apparently had been working for a new unknown boss. So, since Carmelita had already faced him twice, she had been sent to Petropolis to figure out what a criminal like Muggshot was doing in Petropolis, and who he was working for.
And since he didn't want to be left out, her husband, Sly Cooper, had tagged along and was going undercover with her, even if she had threatened to make him sleep on the couch for a year if he messed her work up, like he had done a couple of times in the past.
Right now, the duo was disguised as a couple that was having a date at a rather modest coffee shop. The vixen and the raccoon were waiting for Muggshot and the person he was supposed to meet there.
- Where the hell's Muggshot? He should've been here an hour ago. - Sly complained.
- He'll come, just calm down, ringtail, someone might discover us. - Carmelita said while she sipped at her coffee.
Just then, before Sly could reply, a lizard in a black electronic suit, with a long coat and a hat covering him, got inside the coffee shop where Sly and Carmelita were.
- Looks like we got lucky, that must be Muggshot's appointment. - Sly said.
- Looks like he's not alone either, he's got some company. - Carmelita added while she pointed a white dog and a tan cat entering just after the Chameleon.
- I don't think they're with him, I don't sense any disturbances in the Force around them, but that lizard guy, I can feel he's the one we're after.
- Ok, shut up and try to hide your face, Muggshot's coming in.
And our favorite vixen was right; Muggshot was just entering the coffee shop. He was wearing a long coat, which was strange because of his enormous arms. Sly and Carmelita thought that it was funny that Muggshot actually wore almost the same outfit that the Chameleon was wearing.
Meanwhile, the greatest agents of the local crime-fighting agency, the Turbo Undercover Fighting Force, or TUFF for short, Dudley Puppy and his partner Kitty Katswell, had taken a seat to watch over the Chameleon and an unknown villain to them, a big, muscled, purple-furred dog called Muggshot. Like Carmelita, and without knowing it, they had also been assigned to find out why the local villains had contacted some of the old members of the Fiendish Five and the KLAWW Gang, as well as a few others. Sure, their local villains were psychos, but not at the same level that their probable new allies.
As such, they had to stop the society before it could be formed completely.
- Kitty, I have the strange feeling that we're being watched. - Dudley whispered to his partner.
- Well, this time you're right, it seems that that raccoon and that vixen had been staring and saying some things about us. - Kitty replied as she glanced at the vixen. - They're a tad bit too obvious, I wonder what they're doing here.
- Me too...
- However, we can't focus on that, we have a mission to complete.
- No worries, Kitty, I'm sure I can handle him. - Dudley said confidently.
- Dudley, that Muggshot guy looks like it's almost thrice your weight, strength and height.
- Ow, then I'll leave him to you. - The dog giggled what made Kitty rolling her eyes.
- We'll handle both the Chameleon and Muggshot, don't you worry about it.
- I'm more worried about the ringtail and the vixen over there.
- We should also keep an eye on them, I don't know why, but I think I've seen that raccoon somewhere.
- I think the same, I'm not sure.
- You don't get it, I think I know him... but I can't remember.
All of a sudden, Muggshot stood up and grabbed the nearest citizen as he pulled out one of his giant machine guns. Then the dog started shooting at the roof, making all the people inside the coffee shop run out of the place in panic, while the officer, the thief and the agents stayed in their place.
With a swift move, Sly stood up and pulled out his cane while he twirled it in his hand. In the moment Muggshot saw the twirling cane, the dog let go of the civilian he had in his hand, then he growled and pointed his gun at the ringtail.
- Say goodbye, Cooper! - Muggshot yelled.
Sly gasped as Muggshot pulled the trigger, then he used his Thief Reflexes along with Force Sprint to evade the bullets and rush at Muggshot. However, right before he could hit the purple dog in the face with his cane, he saw a white boot impacting against the top of Muggshot's head. The thief lost his focus on the Thief Reflexes and slammed into Muggshot's chest as the dog grunted in pain and started to collapse.
Sly used his Force Sprint once more and rolled aside and swiftly stood up, letting the dog fall face first into the ground. However, once he did, he was hit in the chest by a greenish blast, which made him fall backwards. The raccoon tried to see who had attacked him, but he just saw a white dog kicking the lizard that had met up with Muggshot in the coffee shop, in the face, and knocked him out.
Few moments later, the white dog walked up to Sly and offered him a hand with a friendly smile.
- What were you trying to do there, my ringtailed friend? - Dudley asked.
- I was... - Sly said, trying to comprehend what had just happened.
- He was trying to obstruct an investigation of the Turbo Undercover Fighting Force. Luckily, he served as distraction while I dealt with Muggshot. - Kitty said as she handcuffed Muggshot. - Dudley, did you handcuff the Chameleon?
- Hold it right there, sister. - Carmelita snapped as she walked up to Kitty. - I don't know what kind of game you think you're playing, but this is an investigation of Interpol and you're getting in the way.
- Interpol? Guess what they say of them is true... - Kitty chuckled.
- Oh, and what do they say? -Carmelita huffed and crossed her arms - They're slow, hot-tempered and deluded, and don't let me get started with Inspector Fox, especially after the whole Sly Cooper fiasco...
- Oh, you didn't just say that... - Carmelita growled as she clenched her fists.
- I have a bad feeling about this... - Sly let out.
- Wait... that voice... - Kitty said as she turned to the raccoon.
The cat's eyes widened once she set her eyes on the ringtailed thief, as she recognized not only his voice, but also his face, his cane and his eyes. Those chocolate eyes could only belong to one person.
- YOU! - Kitty snapped.
Everyone turned to see the angry agent, who had her blaster pointed at the thieving raccoon, who had also turned his head to see who had yelled. When he saw that the furious green eyes of the cat were set on him, he also realized something.
- Kitty? - Sly asked.
- You backstabbing, no-good, lousy, stupid, thieving raccoon! - Kitty yelled at the thief.
Sly felt a bit confused, but his confusion was quickly replaced by anger once he realized that the cat had insulted him.
- At least I'm not an idiotic, simple-minded, spinster, feline agent! - Sly yelled back at the agent.
- You know him? - Dudley asked surprised while Carmelita asked Sly the same question by raising her eyebrow in an almost aggressive way.
- Yes, it's a long story. - Sly sighed.
- All you have to know that stupid raccoon is a coward and a traitor. - Kitty huffed.
- Again with that... I did what I did to protect you, you idiotic cat!
- What are you guys talking about? - Dudley and Carmelita asked.
- Like I said, long story, I'll tell you later.
- You mean I'll tell them later, you're just gonna lie to them, like you always do. - Kitty snapped.
- Of course! Oh, magnificent and flawless mistress of sanctity and purity, Kitty Elisa Katswell! As you always tell the truth because Kitty Katswell commits no mistakes nor has any secrets to hide! Please, teach us how to be like you and show us why you're the victim here!
- I don't lie all the mothefucking time like you do, Cooper! And I am the victim!
- Yeah, keep telling yourself that until you belive it...
While the three law enforcerers and the thief were distracted, the Chameleon slipped his hands from the cuffs and transformed into some kind of weapon, then he shot two shiny round discs to Sly and Carmelita's arms. They tried to dodge them, but to no avail, the discs embedded into the Interpol officers' flesh, making them groan and cringe in pain. Dudley and Kitty saw this, so they tried to lunge at the Chameleon to cuff him again, only to be punched hard in the abdomen by Muggshot, who had recovered his consciousness and broken his cuffs. Then, the Interpol and TUFF agents were thrown hard against a wall, making Kitty, Carm and Dudley lose their consciousness, while Muggshot grabbed Sly by his shirt, put him in front of his face and said:
- Ya really thought that your little friends'd keep me down, Cooper?
- No, but you really need to carry some mints with you, your breath is awful. - Sly replied chortling.
- Oh, ya don't know how much I'm gonna enjoy killin' ya with my bare hands, Cooper.
- Muggshot we must leave, the others are waiting for us at the hideout. - The Chameleon said while he was tugging on Muggshot's coat.
Muggshot growled, but for some reason, he nodded.
- Yer safe by now, but remember that I'm gonna rip ya into a million pieces. - Muggshot said to Sly.
Muggshot grunted and threw Sly hard against a wall. Sly hit the wall and he broke it down, falling unconscious a second later.
Several minutes later, Sly was regaining his consciousness, when he heard that someone was calling his name.
- Sly... Sly? Are you alive? Please, ringtail, respond. - The voice said.
- Come on, ringtail, wake up. - A male voice said.
Sly opened his eyes and he saw the white dog in front of him, he startled and tried to punch him in the face.
- Whoa! Calm down! - The dog asked.
Sly made the dog trip and he cuffed him with great ability. Then, Carmelita grabbed him by his shoulders and made him face her.
- Ringtail, stop! He's not a bad guy, remember?
- Huh? What are you talking about now, Carm?
- He helped me get you out of the rubble.
Sly looked at the dog doubtfully.
- Hi, I think I haven't introduced yet, I'm Dudley Puppy. - Said the dog before he started biting his butt.
Dudley's action only made Sly raise an eyebrow and whisper to his wife:
- He seems to be even stupider than Naruto.
- And so you are, Cooper. - A cat behind Carmelita said.
- I'm surprised you're still here. - Sly said with derision.
- That's because you're a criminal and I'm a secret agent, my job is to stop you.
- Do you understand any of what they're talking about? - Dudley asked to Carmelita.
- Believe me, I wouldn't be as confused as you if I did. - Carmelita replied.
- You should be in jail! - Kitty yelled.
- Oh, trust me, I'd love to right now! Any place is better than being near you! - Sly yelled back at her.
- Can anyone explain what the hell are you two talking about? - Carmelita asked.
Sly and Kitty sighed and glanced at their respective partners.
- You'll see. - Sly began. - Many years ago, before I went on my crusade to recover the Thievius Raccoonus, some lousy criminals caught me and stole my cane.
- But before that, this dirty criminal stole a valuable painting from the Petropolis Museum. - Kitty added.
- I'm not a "dirty criminal", I'm a master thief. - Sly meant clearing his throat. - Anyway, when I recovered it, this kitten and his idiotic and smug partner tried to catch me. And for the record, I stole the painting AFTER recovering my cane.
- Whatever, Cooper. - Kitty said. - Jack and I tried to catch him and his little gang but somehow we couldn't, those stupid thieves got away.
- Well, if Bentley Murray and I were stupid, what does that say about you and your little friend, Jack, if we outsmarted you with ease, and with just an improvised plan?
- Don't call me stupid!
- I'll call you whatever the hell I want!
- Can anyone uncuff me? - Dudley asked.
While Sly and Kitty growled at each other, Carmelita walked up to Dudley and uncuffed him, then she put the cuffs in her pocket and said:
- Ringtail, we don't have any time to fight, we must go after Muggshot and get these things off our arms.
- No, because he's under arrest for robbing the Petropolis Museum and for interfering in a mission of the Turbo Undercover Fighting Force. - Kitty said while she took her cuffs.
- I don't think so, if you couldn't catch me in the past, what makes you think you can do it now? - Sly asked with a smirk.
- Because now I've mastered all the forms of martial arts and my claws are registered as lethal weapons.
- *Yawn* So? I also know some about martial arts, and my cane is the tenth of the list of the deadliest weapons in the galaxy.
- Detective Fox! Cooper! - A badger with a cigar in his mouth yelled as he entered the coffee shop.
- Agents Puppy and Katswell! - A flea in a monitor yelled as he imitated the badger.
Dudley, Sly, Carmelita and Kitty's eyes went wide open and they immediately saluted as their bosses entered the rests of the coffee shop.
- Wait a minute, Barton? - The flea said.
- Herbert, is that you? - The badger said in unison.
- It's been a really long time isn't it?
- Yeah, what have you done in all this years?
- Uh, can you tell me what's happening here? - Dudley asked quietly to Carmelita.
- I think your boss knows mine. - Carmelita replied with a whisper.
- Indeed, Detective Fox, you are correct. - The badger said.
- I'm Sly's wife, remember Chief?- Carm remarked.
- Still, I believe Detective Fox suits you much better, anyway, I want you and your "husband" to meet my old partner from college, Herbert Dumbrowski.
- Agents, I want you to meet my old partner, Barton Barkley. - Herbert said.
- I still don't get it, how is it that you two were partners? - Dudley inquired.
- You'll see... - Barton tried to say.
Barton never finished what he was about to say, as a rain of bullets fell upon them, hitting Sly and Carm in the leg and arm, Dudley in the side and Kitty in the shoulder, which made everything turn blurry and slow for everyone. Dudley fell on his back as he gripped his bullet wound, Kitty fell on her knees and Carmelita fell face first to the ground.
However, Herbert Dumbrowsky was reduced to a mere spot on his broken monitor, while Barton Barkley fell to the ground, with his heart and lungs punctured by the projectiles. Carmelita, Dudley and Kitty gasped in horror as they saw the scene, forgetting their wounds for a moment, while Sly fell to his knees, and right after that, six human agents broke into the remains of the coffee shop.
Sly looked at Carmelita and the latter nodded, understanding what her husband meant. As the agents started to surround them, the raccoon pulled out two little grayish spheres from his pocket and smirked inwardly.
- Carmelita, NOW! - Sly yelled while he threw two smoke bombs to the floor.
Carmelita quickly pulled out her shock pistol and fired at all six agents with it, and when the smoke had cleared out, the TUFF members could see that their attackers were now on the ground.
Sly and Carmelita then got up wearily, Sly looked for something in his backpack while Dudley and Kitty watched them in total confusion.
- What do you think you're doing?! - Kitty asked very startled.
- Carm, biofoam! - Sly said as he threw a can at his wife.
- This will hurt but it'll keep you alive till we can get the bullets out! - Carmelita said as she applied some sort of foam to Kitty's wound.
Kitty winced a bit and hissed, then she looked at her shoulder and saw that the foam had stopped her bleeding and numbed the pain, then she turned at Dudley as she heard him cry in pain and noticed that Sly was applying the same foam to her partner's side.
Just a few seconds after that, the Interpol agents moaned in pain as they applied the foam to their own injuries.
- You ok to walk? - Sly asked his wife.
- Been through worse, remember Mustafar? - Carmelita asked.
- Great, because now we have to run.
- What do you mean? - Dudley asked moaning.
- You saw what those six did, I bet they're not alone. - Carmelita said as she grabbed some of the agents' rifles.
Right after that, the Interpol officer handed one to her husband and the TUFF agents, who got alarmed when they felt them.
- Now let's go, we can escape through the back door and then we'll have to steal a car or something. - Carmelita said as she checked her gun's ammo.
- We have the TUFF Mobile just a few blocks from here. - Dudley said as he imitated Carmelita.
- I'm sure this is all a misunderstanding! We could...! - Kitty said.
- If any sort of law enforcement organization finds us, they'll shoot us at sight, so we better escape while we have time and find out why the hell they had orders to kill us. - Sly explained tensely.
Reluctantly, Kitty sighed and cocked her rifle. Then the quartet nodded and ran to the back door as another storm of lead wreaked havoc on the coffee shop again.
Using her healthy leg, Carmelita kicked the back door out of its hinges and the quartet ran away through it, noticing that the alley was blocked. But instead of stopping to think, Sly used his cane to lower the ladder of a fire escape. Then he gestured the others to go up it while he kept them covered.
Kitty, Dudley and Carmelita climbed the ladder quickly and started running upstairs as fast as they could, suppressing the pain they felt on their wounds as much as they could. Then Sly climbed the ladder and followed the other fugitives as a couple of agents walked out of the coffee shop with their rifles ready to shoot.
The group reached the rooftop as the agents started to shoot at them, but thanks to their position, the bullets didn't hit any of them.
Once they stood on the rooftop, they ran away as the vehicles under them started to mobilize to follow them, so Dudley pulled out the keys of the TUFF Mobile and pressed a button on the little remote control on them, which activated the car and made it fly up to their position, hovering just a few inches away from the building.
- Quick, this way! - Dudley said as he jumped from the building.
And just when the others thought the dog had committed suicide, Dudley lifted the TUFF Mobile just a bit more. Kitty jumped on the passenger seat while Sly and Carm jumped to the backseat. Immediately after that, the dog pushed the throttle and flew away as the vehicles bellow tried to follow them with no results.
Several minutes later, once the quartet had gotten out of the city, everyone sighed in relief, but Kitty turned to Sly and slapped him hard. The raccoon grunted in pain and then glared at the cat.
- Why the hell did you slap me?! - Sly asked while he rubbed his cheek.
- It's all your fault, Cooper! - Kitty yelled.
- It's not my freaking fault! I don't even know what the hell is going on here!
- Kitty, calm down, I'm sure ringtail is telling the truth. - Carmelita reassured her.
- Don't tell me what to do, you lousy, no-good cop! – retorted Kitty hissing.
- Don't you dare to insult my wife or you'll regret it! - Sly warned.
- Everyone, shut up! - Dudley yelled annoyed. - Now we're in this together, we're supposed to be helping each other, not trying kill each other!
- Dudley is right, you two must stop blaming and threatening each other. - Carmelita sighed.
- I will never work with Sly Cooper. - Kitty huffed while folding her arms.
- I'd rather to lose the Thievius Raccoonus than working with Kitty. - Sly said while he imitated Kitty.
- Both of you should look at what you're alike, like the fact that both of you are really headstrong. - Carmelita let out.
- I AM NOT LIKE HIM/HER! - Sly and Kitty yelled.
- He's just a stupid thief! - Kitty said.
- And she's just a spinster agent! - Sly replied.
- What did you call me, Cooper?!
- You heard me, Katswell!
- This is gonna get us nowhere. - Dudley sighed. - Well, not really, it may lead us to our graves...
- If you two don't shut up and begin getting along, I will personally shoot you with a MAC gun! - Carmelita warned.
- I don't care about what you're gonna do, but I'm up for recruiting some friends of mine to solve this and clear my name, my wife's name and probably Dudley's name too. - Sly let out. - Who's coming with me?
- We have no other choice, do we? - Carmelita said.
- I need to know why those agents killed the Chief and your boss. - Dudley stated and then sighed.
- You can't be serious! He's a criminal! We're supposed to fight them not join them, Dudley! - Kitty snapped.
- This wouldn't be the first time we worked with villains, you worked with Jack, and there's the time when Snaptrap worked at TUFF with us. - Dudley said.
- Besides, what are you gonna do to clear your name? - Sly asked. - Those guys were going to kill us, they even killed your boss and Carm's boss, if it wasn't because of me and Carm, and a bit thanks to your partner, we would be dead by now.
- I'm going to explain everything, I've never done anything bad in my entire life, and I won't ruin my record by working with a gang of thieves. - Kitty replied.
- Fine, have it your way, it's not as if you could get either killed or thrown into jail... Oh, wait, it is! - Sly said sarcastically.
- I will tell them that I'm not guilty.
Sly let out a sarcastic chuckle.
- Are you really that stupid? Do you really think that they'd send those agents if they didn't have enough evidence to prove that we did whatever they think we did? We're all as good as dead if they find us.
- Besides, we're not going to steal whatever museum, bank or anything that crosses our path. - Carmelita let out.
- We'd just steal what we need and when we need it.
- I won't. - Kitty said firmly.
- C'mon, Kitty, it's not like we're going to join his gang forever. - Dudley said trying to convince her.
The cat looked at the ground as the raccoon sighed deeply.
- It's your choice, join us and you might get a chance to clear your record, or do this by yourself and risk getting caught or killed. - Sly said.
- Argh! Fine then! - Kitty let out in defeat. - But don't get me wrong Cooper; I'm doing this to restore my name and TUFF's status as a crime-fighting organization.
- Works for me. - Sly shrugged.
- What do we do now? - Carmelita asked.
- We have to go and rescue Keswick, he stayed at the headquarters. - Dudley said.
- No, we can't risk ourselves doing that, we'll save him but first we need my old pals and the rest of my gang, maybe also some help from my newest friends. - Sly said. - Also we need more equipment, without it we can't do anything.
- We have the TUFF Mobile and there's four of us, we don't need anything else to get into TUFF headquarters. - Kitty replied.
- If you want to die, then let's go. - Sly responded defiantly.
- Have it your way then, Cooper.
- Thanks, now, let's go to Holland, Penelope and Bentley are at the Black Baron's old castle.
- In the meantime, I'll call the others to see if they can lend us a hand to know what the hell is going on. - Carmelita said as she pulled out a communicator from her pocket.
The four fugitives sighed heavily, then Dudley set course to Holland.
"I just hope they haven't gotten to them before us." Sly thought worriedly.
