Fanfiction by Tsubasa Namikaze and Tanaka Senpai
Itachi could feel Sasuke chasing him from behind. He glanced at his former brother, annoyed that the child wouldn't stay down and saw the crimson-and-black flames of the Sharingan stare right back at him. Unbidden, his Mangekyo flared to life and the pinwheel danced wildly as his vision locked onto the others'. At once he could feel the potential hidden in that flesh and hungered for the opportunity to increase his strength. The secret scrolls left behind by Madara Uchiha hinted at the inevitable fate of any Mangekyo user: eternal night, blindness. But there was an even more vague reference to a permanent treatment for the affliction, involving another's fully awakened Sharingan, allowing the cured to gain new strengths while eliminating old weakness.
If there was a chance that he could become greater still and surpass his limits, Itachi would take it. But Sasuke would need a little prodding in the right direction. So just before the gates to the Uchiha compound's exit, Itachi stopped. Soon Sasuke caught up, but was panting hard and on the verge of passing out. Still, however, the newly awakened Sharingan glared with murderous intent, none of its inner fire extinguished.
"Why, brother?"
"They were weak. Their existence was merely a test to my power in order to liberate myself from their constraints. You see, you foolish boy, they were inferior to I, who was born Uchiha but made something far more than that. They were concerned about the clan, about keeping in place rules and regulations that limit one's growth. By freeing myself from their ignorant chains I have attained new power in our bloodline. I have become the true heir to the eyes, and the others were a disgrace on its part. Now they are no more, and the legend of the Sharingan will start anew and more fearsome that ever. Can you comprehend that, Sasuke?"
"B-but... Mother, and Father!"
"Nothing more than the dirt beneath my foot. Just like you."
"I will kill you for this, Itachi!"
"Then live today, like the hopeless coward you are. Cling to your life without honour, Uchiha. Use your hate to become strong. Live with no compassion, kill all who deceive you…" Without warning Itachi caught Sasuke in an ocular genjutsu which made him sway dangerously on the edge of reality. With nothing left to keep him tethered to consciousness, Sasuke's vision began to blacken. His eyes began to burn, severe pain had found a way to his brain. Itachi turned away. He turned his back on the home he once knew. He turned his back on the remains of a clan once worth living in. He turned his back on a family once worth caring for. But he uttered one last promise to Sasuke - the potential now worth something to him – as the boy fainted.
"...Because one day, when your eyes are like mine, they will join my own."
