She said,

I was seven and you were nine

I looked at you like the stars that shined

In the sky,

The pretty lights

And our daddies used to joke about the two of us

Growing up and falling in love and our mamas smiled

And rolled their eyes

And said oh, my, my, my

As Jake was bending over to fix his shoelace, Sam dumped a bucket of water on Jake's head. Jake screamed and whipped around. He began to chase Sam, but the look in his eyes was good natured.

"Aren't they cute?" said Mr. Forester jokingly to Mr. Ely.

Take me back to the house in the backyard tree

Said you'd beat me up, you were bigger than me

You never did,

You never did

Take me back when our world was one block wide

I dared you to kiss me and ran when you tried

Just two kids,

You and I...

Oh, my, my, my, my

Jake grabbed the back of Sam's coat, the water still dripping off of his own. "I'm gonna beat you up," he threatened.

Sam slipped out of her coat and stuck her tongue out at Jake. "Missed me, missed me, now you gotta kiss me," she yelled.

Jake grabbed her belt loop and leaned forward to kiss her, but Sam screamed and ran away, giggling.

Well, I was sixteen when suddenly

I wasn't that little girl you used to see

But your eyes still shined

Like pretty lights

And our daddies used to joke about the two of us

They never believed we'd really fall in love

And our mamas smiled and rolled their eyes

And said oh, my, my, my...

Take me back to the creek beds we turned up

Two A.M. riding in your truck

And all I need

Is you next to me

Take me back to the time we had our very first fight

The slamming of doors instead of kissing goodnight

You stayed outside til the morning light

Oh, my, my, my, my

Jake and Sam sat on the back of his old, paint-peeling Ford truck, basking in the moonlight, when suddenly Jake wrapped his arm around Sam and sighed. He looked directly into her eyes and leaned forward to kiss her.

"Grandma, look! Jake and Sam are kissing," cried Cody from inside the house.

Jake jerked back from Sam, blushing, and, or course, rubbing the back of his neck.

A few years had gone and come around

We were sitting at our favorite spot in town

And you looked at me,

Got down on one knee

"So, all finished with college now?" asked Sam.

Jake swallowed. "Yeah."

Sam nodded.

"Hey Sam, I really want to ask you something . . ."

Take me back to the time when we walked down the aisle

Our whole town came and our mamas cried

You said I do

And I did too

Take me home where we met so many years before

We'll rock our babies on that very front porch

After all this time,

You and I

Jake looked down at Sam and tucked her hair behind her ear. "I do."

And the guests cheered.

I'll be eighty-seven; you'll be eighty-nine

I'll still look at you like the stars that shine

In the sky, oh, my, my, my...

"Jacob, when did you fall in love with me?" asked Sam.

"The minute I met you."

"When you were two?"

"Don't remember anything else, but that moment I met you, eighty nine years ago, Brat."

Sam laughed. "You called me Brat from the very beginning, didn't you?"

"Ever since you were born, Samantha Anne. Ever since you were born."
