It was an extremely hot day in mineral town; most shops were closed till the heat died down. People that did go out in the heat got their stuff done quickly; the talk of the town was how annoying the heat was.

One of the people who didn't was Gray, the blacksmith's grandson. Why should he? His job required him to deal with the heat, most of his time was spent under the forge. Where it gets close to 133 degrees; to him, This was nothing.

It was Gray's lunch hour, sitting on the step to the shop; eating a pickle. Wearing a white shirt, with blue jeans. His hat on his head like always, he stared blankly at the ground nibbling on his pickle.

I have about fifteen minutes till its time to get back to work; wonder if we'll actually get any customers today. Last two days the place has been a ghost shop. Gray explained.

"Um... Gray?" Mumbled a quiet voice.

Gray looked up and his face immediately turned bright red at what he saw, Mary, in a cute red dress. Glasses on her face, book in her hands, held to her chest. Her brown hair kept down, in that cute way she always keeps in it. Her face had a red tint on it, and she kept smiling at the boy in front of her.

"M-Mary? What are you doing here?"

"I got here as fast as I could, I... wanted to see you."

Gray smiled, ""Hungry? I got another pickle."

"I'd love one.' Mary smiled and she sat next to Gray, he then pulled out a pickle from his pocket, it actually was very juicy. And looked delicious, Mary took it and nibbled on it.

"You really find the best pickles Gray."

"Thank you." Gray replied smiling.

There was an awkward silence for a little bit, both kids had a crush on the other. But didn't know how to express their feelings, they was probably too young anyway. Not to mention their obligations, Gray had to help his grandfather run the blacksmith and Mary loved her library, falling in love could mean the destruction of that wonderful building. Its better this way, all that matters is spending time with each other. Not that complicated relationship stuff.

Gray had to break the silence, "How is the Library going?"

Mary's face lit up like a Christmas tree, "its going very well, though, you're the only person that frequently comes in. though, you've come so many times that the mayor has decided to increase the funding of the library. So, we're getting new books. I'm so happy."

That just made Gray's day, to know that he was able to help make Mary's day good just made him feel so good about himself. Normally, all he can do is screw up. Lord knows how many times his grandfather is getting on him for not paying attention while doing his work. The best part about it, he made Mary smile. The only person he really cares for in this town. His face was a tomato, and he honestly didn't care who knew it.

"Thank you Gray. It means a lot to me."

Gray scratched the back of his head; that was covered by his cap, "It was my pleasure. I just love helping you out, I-"

Gray found himself interrupted when he felt Mary's warm lips softly kiss his cheek, his eyes widened, face burning as hot as the weather. His breathe completely took away, when she pulled back he looked at her. Mary's face just as red as his was.

"I have to go back to the Library, Please be careful when you go back to work. Take care Gray, and... I love you."

Mary ran off before Gray could answer, All the boy could do is smile. He quickly finished his pickle and walked back inside the shop, ready for anything his grandfather would throw at him...
