Fighting for Love
Prologue
I wake up to a knock on the door. I open the door to see my friend, Cato.
"Katniss, ready to hunt?" he asks me.
"I just woke up, Cato. Let me get myself ready. See you near the fence in 10 minutes."
I'm Katniss Everdeen, a 16 year old girl living in District 12. Our district is the poorest district in Panem, and is divided into two sections: the Town and the Seam. I live in the Seam, which is the poor part of the district. I provide for my family through hunting, which is normally illegal, but our Peacekeepers don't mind it. I honestly can't remember the last time the fence in our district had electricity. My father taught me how to use a bow and arrow when I was eight.
My sister, Primrose Everdeen, Prim for short, is the polar opposite of me. She gained my mother's Town looks, while I gained my looks from my Seam father. She's much more outgoing than me, and she can't hurt a bug even if she wanted to. I usually had my father with hunting, while she had my mother with healing.
I'm not exactly good with socializing, but I somehow managed to make friends. Cato Wyrne is one of them. He's seventeen years old. We met eight years ago, thanks to our fathers. He lives in Town. That doesn't mean that they're well off though. Our parents are close friends, and our dads work together in the mines and hunts together. Five years ago, a mine explosion happened and killed many of the miners, our fathers included. Ever since that day, me and Cato worked extremely hard to provide for our family. He had to provide for his sister, Elyssa (who is 9), his brother, Nolan (who is 11), and his mother whose job couldn't pay enough for them to eat normally. Meanwhile, I had my sister and my mother, who was extremely depressed to the point that she couldn't take care of us.
I quickly took a bath, got dressed, and went to the fence. I see Cato waiting for me.
"Finally, you said ten minutes, Katniss. I thought that I was the slow one." he says with a cocky smile.
"Please. You know that you're slower than me. No reason to be cocky."
"You know you like it, Katniss. Stop denying it."
I ignore his reply. "Where's Gale?"
"Missing me already, Catnip?" I turn around and see Gale.
Gale Hawthorne is another friend of mine. He's eighteen and he calls me Catnip because he misheard my name. He, like me, lives in the Seam. His father also died in the mining accident, and he also hunts for his family. The three of us are very similar for those reasons. He originally didn't approve of Cato, but once he knew about his father and his hunting, he has given him more respect.
"Gale, help me out here and tell Cato that nobody likes an arrogant guy."
"You can't be cocky if you know that what you're saying is right." I roll my eyes at his comment.
"Let's just go. We have to go back soon for the reapings anyways." Gale reminds us.
"I forgot about the reapings." I tell them. "How many slips do you guys have? I have twenty in there."
Cato's the first to reply. "I have thirty-one. I might get reaped."
"At least you have less than me, I have forty-two. Let's hunt now."
We make our way into the woods.
A/N: This is my try in a Hunger Games story. Not sure if I'm going to continue with this or not. Please leave your opinions in a review. Follow and Favorite too, if you're into it.
