Harry, Ron, and Hermione had just saved Draco from the room of requirement. Draco was mourning over crabbe's dead body. Hermione told Harry and Ron to move on and that she be right behind him as soon as they left she turned to Draco "A-are you okay?" She asked him.
"One of my best friends is dead, Granger. I am not okay. Why do you care anyway?" He wondered if she was just being sympathetic She moved beside him. Should she put a comforting arm around him? Should she leave him be?
"I just... I know what it's like to lose a friend." She thought of Fred, not even an hour ago. Draco… All the times called Hermione a mudblood and he had never realized actually how pretty she was. Standing there, dirt on her face, tear-stricken from the blood-traitor's death, but yes, she was indeed a sight despite all that she had been through. She looked down at crabbe's burnt body. "We should put him in the great hall..." She muttered. "That's where the rest of the c-corpses are." Draco just stared at his hands. "C'mon," she told him. She lifted crabbe's arms and watched as he lifted crabbe's legs. They entered the great hall in silence. They had just placed his body in the table when they heard mrs. Weasley yell "not my daughter you bitch!"
Draco let out a gasp as he watched his aunt fall to the floor. Hermione, on the other hand, tried to suppress a smile. He looked at Hermione and she quickly try to change her expression around to show a neutral expression.
"Follow me" said taking her to the slytherin common room, which was empty, as all the slytherins were in the dungeons. She didn't know why, but she obliged. She sat on the sofa and offered her. She sat down.
"What is it Malfoy?" She could tell he had something on his mind.
"I just..there's a lot on my mind right now. But I just wanted to tell you, you look beautiful."
Hermione's eyes narrowed, was this some kind of trick?
"I wanted to tell you ever since you set foot in my manor." he took note of her suspicious look. he pulled out his wand, or his mother's wand, rather, so it was in sight and lay it on the table. "I mean it." he whispered.
"Draco.." this was the first time she addressed him by his first name. "I don't know what you're expecting to happen…I mean, we are on opposing sides of this war. Your aunt just died, and a woman who's as good my own mother just killed her. I couldn't be more thrilled about that, but she's your aunt… and I dread to think" she shut her eyes. "If someone closer to you died, well, I couldn't- I wouldn't be the proper one to console you." She looked at him. His expression was completely vacant, but she somehow knew he wanted her to keep talking. "Look, maybe someday… someday when we're both out of this war… assuming…"
"Assuming we both survive." he said thickly. She nodded slowly. He sighed. "All right then." there was a lot of false bravado in his voice. He got up and helped her up. He led her out of the common room, but pulled her into a tight embrace before saying "Go. Find Potter. Make sure he's okay"
She nodded. "And you. With … with your family."
He nodded once and watched her run away from him.
