Hiccup was busily shoving papers aside, upturning pots pans and various furniture trying to find the designs for his new more streamlined saddle for Toothless. There was an almighty crash. He turns around to see his dad's helmet or mother's breast plate; depending on how you wanted to look at it, on the ground with one of the horns broken off.
"Oh man," Hiccup breathed "Dad is going to kill me"
He picks up the horn and the helmet and attempts to attach them before realising that it shows signs of being detachable. He notices that the horn that broke off is hollow. On closer inspection, he finds a small hole at the tip of the horn.
"Ah," he exclaims "Dad must use it as a hunting horn"
He places the tip of the horn to his lips. He goes to blow when he tastes something weird on the tip of the horn. It tastes… waxy.
He brings it closer to his face and sees… ear wax
He puts the tip of the horn to his ear and listens.
He can hear perfectly for several yards
'Ok,' he thought 'why is dad using a hollowed out horn to that allows him to eavesdrop on people'
It was then he remembered something his dad had said. Those words echoed in his head
"Nothing happens on this island with out me hearing about it"

I was watching the movie for the 4th time in as many days when I picked up on this line and wondered just how would he hear everything going on around the island
