Disclaimer: Why is it neccasery 2 say I don't own Next To Normal or any of the characters? Isn't it obvious...lol
This is AU obviously since Natalie is older then Gabe who is still alive
The siren sounded loudly. Diana Goodman held her infant child to her and sobbed fearfully. Dan held their two-year-old daughter who was clearly terrified.
"It's going to be alright Natalie," he reassured his daughter, "Gabe is going to be alright"
Natalie nodded knowing that she could trust her father.
As they got into the hospital door a sickly Gabe was whisked away by the doctors and nurses. Dan filled out the paperwork while Diana took Natalie to the playroom. She silently prayed for a miracle. It was not until hours later that the doctor came out.
"Your son," he told them, "needs a blood transfusion and his sister appears is the only match"
Both Natalie and Gabe had a rare blood type.
Dan and Diana went to explain the situation to their daughter in words that she could understand.
"Do I have to get poked with the needle," she asked.
"If you do it," Dan said, "that's how they get the blood out of you"
"Will it make baby better," she asked.
Natalie couldn't pronounce the word Gabe. She called him baby.
"Yes sweetheart it would," Diana said.
"Okay," Natalie replied, "I'll do it if it will make baby better"
Dan and Diana looked at their two-year old daughter.
They looked at each other. They couldn't believe that their 2-year-old was being so unselfish. Two is usually all about me, myself and I. They were sure they would have to force her and yet she was doing it without being pushed into it. The transfusion would take hours so they put Natalie in a room with a TV in it so she wouldn't get board.
Diana stayed with her. Dan stayed with Gabe. Diana held her hand while she was stuck with the needle. Natalie fussed a little but didn't cry. Dan held Gabe and sang to him while he cried and screamed as the IV pierced his skin.
It took a long time but finally the transfusion was over. They brought Gabe into the room that Natalie was in. He was looking better. The color was back in his face again.
"Mommy," Natalie asked, "Can I hold baby?"
Diana shook her head.
"Not today honey," she said, "You just had a lot of blood taken out of you. You can hold him tomorrow when you're stronger."
"I'm not tiwrd," Natalie protested.
She couldn't say anything more because she fell asleep.
