Even now, when he had to fix Bulkhead after that near-fatal encounter with the Insecticon during the relic hunt, as he usually does over and over again, he checks everything more thoroughly than ever. He tells Bulkhead to hold still during check-up on his recovering leg, to ease up on the physical activity, and not to let the leg relapse into never fully functioning again.
Even things Ratchet has already checked, he checks again, making sure that everything is in order that everything is secure and every other Autobot is back in the base. The medic stays there and he will not die.
There is no other proxy for a medic on the team, and the same goes for Bulkhead.
