Erika stands behind the marimba, listening to what her new section leader is telling her during sectionals.
"..and you NEVER touch the head of the yarn mallets. Don't press them down on the keys like this.", Jason demonstrated what he says. She nods, drifting off. It didn't seem like too much to remember.
When he was done speaking, Erika noticed a small thread sticking out of the mallet's head. She picked it up and started to pull at it.
"Erika! What did I just get done telling you"
"What"
"Weren't you listening at all?", he asked harshly. She quickly put the mallet down and gave him a look.
"Why are you yelling at me? I didn't do anything!", she argued.
"I just got done telling you some rules. It seems you don't listen well. That might be how it is at home or where ever, but not here. I'm your section leader, you listen to me.", he sighed. "Look, I don't want to get off to a bad start with anyone, okay? But you have to listen.", he calmed down. "I want you to work on these warm ups while I go make copies of our show music.", he walked away.
She stood there, staring at the marimba. Finally, she picked up the mallets, started playing, and learned all five warm ups in three minutes being the quick learner she is.
When Jason returned, he gave her her part, and asked how the warm ups were coming along.
"I already learned them.", she replied.
"Really? Let me hear, then.", he counted her off, then she played. "Impressive.", he said as she finished. "Good job." He patted her on the back.
I'm not a dog, she thought to herself while rolling her eyes. Jason caught that.
"You rolling your eyes at me?", he asked, while trying to keep a straight face. He couldn't hold it in any longer, and laughed.
"What's so funny?", she asked in her bratty sounding voice.
"Oh, just you. You looked so worried when I asked about you rolling your eyes at me"
Their attention turned to the band director, Mr. Riley, as he walked to the front of the room.
"Okay, guys, listen up.", he announced. The talking continued. He tried again to quiet them. After his third attempt, he went to the percussion section and used a pair of crash cymbals to get everyone's attention. "I shouldn't have to do this, okay?", he said, frustrated. "Anyway, I'd like to welcome the new freshman to our band. Since today is our first day of band camp, I'd like you to get into your sections and get to know your section leader and other players. If you need me, I'll be in my office.", after he walked out, the sections began teaming up and going their separate ways.
"Well, Erika, seems you're the only freshman in pit this year. This is Jaime, your co-section leader, Lola, Ashli, Yukino, and Dan. Guys, why don't you tell her about yourselves while I once again go make more copies of music"
"Hi, I'm Japanese, as you can see", Yukino giggled, "and other than Japanese and English, I'm learning French"
"Hey, yeah, so you know I'm Lola. Other than marching band, I'm also in a rock band with my friends called Insanity"
"I'm Ashli, wait, Dan why are we introducing ourselves when Jason already did"
"We're not, we're telling her more about ourselves.", he replied, then turned to Erika, "Don't mind her, she's the airhead of the family. Anyway, you know I'm Dan, I'm into skateboarding and photography"
"He's the wise one of the family.", Lola said." Never lets us do anything fun.", she teased.
"Hey, who said that? I just so happen to be quite the party animal.", he growled. "Anyway, Jaime's kinda shy, but still, she's pretty cool.", he reached over and rubbed her leg.
"They're going out.", Lola said apathetically. Erika just smiled and thought about what great adventures she'll have in pit this year.
